OT: Where to go camping...

I was thinking of going camping next week end (25-28). I need a break...two months with only 5 days off....but I'm not quite sure where I want to go...I'm thinking the coast up above Bodega Bay at Salt Point..it's just a cool place to hang out on the cliffs and watch the ocean...anyone got any other cool ideas...
I really wouldn like to find some place on the coast that has some trout fishing near by..if it's catch and release only that's even better.

You nailed it bodega bay and salt point are nice area's, I know some places but they are up in the mountains... I was planning on going camping that weekend also, I too am not sure where I am going.

Theres some nice camping spots somewhat near the coast along the Russian River, wasnt able to fish there at the time so I cant speak about that, but beautifull cool country nonetheless.Last time I was there me and my buddy sparked up an affair with 2 blonde camp summer volunteer girls, talk about a campground with alot of potential:inlove: , all I remember was having a blast, some squaredancing, and some romance.

If you ever go to the mountains check Silver Lake by Kirkwood.Gorgeous woods, great fishing, perfect camping weather right now as well, very cool climate. Went there last month with the kids to air out and had a good time.

I am from up in the Eureka/Arcata area on the coast. Between here and there there are numerous spots in the Redwoods this is the best time of year to go up there. One that is very popular is Patricks Point above Trinidad, Ca. Its on the coast in the Redwoods next to the beach. Humboldt State University has a Marine Lab there with touchy feely tanks and such....

if you want decent fishing, great bird watching, and warm water you should check out Antelope Lake-- it's about 3.5 hours north of us but well worth the drive. my gf and some of her friends set up a trip and i begrudgingly went-- and had a great time! :) bald eagles, a few trout caught, and cool nights with plenty of stars overhead-- very nice.

I think we are pretty set on Salt Point..now if we can just get in, got to call and see if there are any spots open...

oh good luck on that one.... I use to work for the company that made reservations for salt point...

I can't even get though to Reserve America....errrr...there is that private camp ground just down the road though that I believe is all first come first serve...

Why not Stillwater, if Salt Point is booked?

FWIW< I go up there typically ~5 times a year. If you look hard enough, you might be able to catch some trout, like I do :D Sorry, the spot sure isn't for public comsumption. I've all ready said too much....

Reserveameria.com is kid of garbage site....it kept telling me that there was availability, but wouldn't let me book...I finallly got though to them on the phone, and it's book solid...but I think they keep 3-4 sites on a first come first serve..

Gresham, thanks for the tip. It's in the same area, which is all that matters, I can drive a few miles up to go to the beaches NP...I'll give them a call and see if they have anything available..

edit...just called got to make reservations 10days in advance...but they do keep 2 spots on a FCFS basis...
What ever happened to being able to just jump in the car and go camping...now it's more like trying to book a trip to Fiji..

yeah there booked this weekend, They are open during the week and sunday.

Man now I wanna go camping....

Yeah, I don't think you will ever find me at buringman though...far too many people, and the whole thing is just a little to odd for me....I want to go camping to get away from from everyone...

I know you want the coast line, but check out some federal sites up in the redwoods near some rivers or streams.

burning man starts on aug 27th. thats the campout of a lifetime

Camping with DEA agents in training sounds, um, fun :D

Wow I was thinking BB area as soon as I saw the thread title. :D

Also consider Moss Beach/Half Moon Bay area south of SF. There are tons of areas where you can find great tidepooling action. Possibly even better than up by BB. If you're not a grown man who enjoys strapping on waders to play with crabs and sea anemones like me, Point Reyes has a lot of cool short hikes. There's a beautiful lighthouse, Tomales Point hike will almost assure you of seeing some elk herds. Cool stuff there too.

Isn't California great? I wonder how threads like this go in, say, Nebraska? ;)

I'm pretty set on the salt point area. I know that most of the state and local campground are probably booked as far as the reservations go. However they keep a couple of sites that can not be reserved and are first come first serve. So I think I'll head up Friday morrning and get there by like 10am. If I can't get one of the nonreserve spots, there is a private campground called ocean cove campground that is between Stillwater and Salt Point that is entierly first come first serve. I know it's probably not the best spot and will feel kind of trailer parkish like Lawsons landing, but all I need is a place for the tent....durring days we will be out exploring the coastline or doing some hiking and biking.
