Otohime news

And if you recall the beginning of the thread, another experiment was ran:attempting to raise Lysmata amboinensis exclusively on Otohime B1,as crazy as it sounds.
Well,I can report that unbelievably, larvae lived and grew up to Zoea 5,which was reached at 14º day. Then they marked time bouncing in that stage.Last died at 23 days.
Food was taken and could be seen in the digestive tract.
This is surprising and I don´t think it was done before. This shows that they take the food and they thrive on it.
They died at last,I know, but they also die with other diets ;)

Now you certainly can:D
Though I doubt they will modify their formula intended for food fish:rolleyes:
But it is a simple matter to have them,or you,or us to topdress the finished product with Naturose.
What's with the roll eyes?

1/100 of a run would settle all your (MO breeders) needs for a year ;) I'm not asking them to change the entire line, but rather, to create another "MO" feed in limitted quanitities. Almost every fish food manufacturerer I know of, will do a custom run.

I just bought a supply of Otohime, but I will do it again if I can buy Otohime with astaxanthine!

When, oh please, when?

 expressing doubt, concern.Meaning something else for you:confused:
I might be wrong but I don´t think they make custom runs but custom top dressing ...

so no bbs or rots, just B1????
Yup,isn´t that unexpected?.
I´m now raising L.amboinensis and L.b.......(pepper)on B1 and bbs.
Topdressing your food is a piece of cake,Kathy,I can teach you;)
(well actually way easier than cooking a piece of cake):D

Luis, your students await!
Wow,this class is getting popular!.But see that the subject is TOP-DRESS,not top-less!
Top-dressing is the process feed makers use to incorporate new ingredients after the pellets or crumbles were finished. They usually spray the ingredients with special equipment and then use a sealing agent to fix it to the feed particle.
The method I am going to give you is very simple and you can do it in your kitchen.
So here it goes (drums beat please):p

RECIPE FOR HOME TOP DRESSING
Ingredients:
The feed you want to have top-dressed.
The stuff you want to top-dress on your feed, let´say NatuRose.
Fish oil.Soy oil,or any oil could work if you can´t find fish oil.I use squid oil, high in HUFA and tasty (to the fish:D ).But the recipe says "fish oil".

A-put the desired amount of feed in a bowl.Say 300 grams (about 10 oz).
B-add 1% (3 grams)of NatuRose.Strain it if it is not perfectly powdery.
C-mix well.
D-while stirring,add 2% (6ml) of oil.
E-keep mixing.Ready.

Wasn´t it simple?;) .Hope big corps won´t go after me for revealing top secrets!:p

No top-less ???? :D:D

I like simple methods of doing things ! Maybe it´s because I´m pretty dumb at DIY projects... but I´ll keep doing them anyway.

Just one question Luis, how long can you keep the "top-dressed food" when it´s done ? Is it for immediate use ?

Anderson.

I have a dumb question. What is on the bottom of your tank in the pic of the two tomato clowns?

Not dumb,everybody asked!:D
It´s a synthetic stuff in my photo tank pretending to look like a natural substrate!

How long can you keep the food after the oil treatment? Does it need to be refridgerated? Does it leave a scum on the water surface?

I take the amount I will top-dress,200-300 grams from the freezer.I keep it in the fishroom thereafter and use it.It won´t harm to keep it in the fridge if you like. No,the powder is sealed,"encapsulated"with the oil and won´t leach.

My order from BSD of naturose came in last week, I performed the top dressing as per Luis' class, and I think it is a vast improvement over the naked otohime. My fish look great! And are growing fast!

One deviation, I used twice as much Naturose as the recipe required. I don't know why I did this, but I did. All is good.

Thanks Luis,
This was the answer to a real problem!

Very well Kathy, you´re an advantaged pupil!:D
I guess it is the answer to two real problems:
1-Solving the only defect an otherwise very good feed had, making it perfect.(You´re welcome,Randy and Greesham, will bill you later:cool: )
2-Giving TR fish a nice colour so as to be accepted by the trade.

It doesn´t harm to use twice the dose.A friend of us uses many times the dose. But it is said that if you go over the recipe amount,it will not be fixed and goes to waste.Try it.
With 1% you get beautiful still natural looking colours. But you´ll never obtain those showy flashy reds of ORA´s ocellaris. They sure use something else. But they won´t tell.:p

BTW I ended the experiment with ocellaris and frenatus,as the fish are reaching market size and need to colour up.So I moved the four groups to top dressed Otohime. It was clear that though Otohime produced pale reds, especially in frenatus,it gave better growth and overall health.

Luis, do you think the Otohime might make a suitable 2nd food for the baby Apogon leptacanthus?

Also, what is the "oil" you use in your top dressing?

Matt
