Otohime vs. BSD's GP Diet

reggiepe

Seriously?
I have recently been reading posts regarding the successful use of Otohime to ween fry off of live foods. I started checking prices and was amazed at the price and also limited sources for purchase. In my search I found on the Brine Shrimp Direct website something that appears similiar to Otohime and was wondering if anyone has tried it or knows if it is a similiar product. Here is a link to the item page at BSD:

Never tried it. What I can tell you is that I've raised a few hundred Tomato and GSM's off of my initial Otohime starter pack and I am not even halfway throught it. Well worth the cost considering it comes from the same source as my rotifers so I saved on the shipping too.

+1

I'm not sure what prices you saw but the 800-1000 micron diet works out to 2.32 per ounce. Otohime C2 works out to about .63 an ounce. I don't get how you feel its cheaper...

Yeah, I believe you are right about the costs....for a large scale operation. But I am super low scale....off the radar low scale. Definitely cheaper when broken down that way and bought in bulk.

I have used both. Since Golden Pearls comes in smaller sizes than the smallest Otohime, it is possible to start on dry food earlier. In my experience, it is better to have lots of rotifers as the dry food really pollutes the water.

Speaking of pollution....

Also remember that if you decide to co-culture your rotifers for any length of time in the larval tank live phyto will pollute much much less that the prepared rotifers foods. However the prepared rotifer foods (Rotifer Diet RotiGrow, etc) are much more dense and sooooooo much easier IMO. Just add some drop and toss the bottle back in the fridge.
