Our 20L progression thread

Well, I am a lurker on RC and came across your thread. I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I am glad your family is safe and I will be praying for your family, home, tank, etc.

Like everyone said, the tank can be replaced but you can't. Be safe and please let us know how you are doing.

Lee

thank you lhoy, the more people we have like you and the others of this thread (spoon, ajp, nagel) the easier it is to get through this hard time.

i have been eyeing this thread, but man, i hope everything turns out ok for you with the hurricane...

Tank Replacement & Help

Tank Replacement & Help

Dear Chris and Jamie,

In the same thought process as AJP, I would like to make the following offer.

I have an extra 55 gallon tank with nice custom stand and canopy. The very top of the canopy needs some work but maybe there is a reefer in the central Texas area that would donate some woodworking time. I will have the tank, stand, and canopy nice and clean as well.

I understand you don't yet know the status of your tank, but I would like to offer it as a replacement in the event you lost your tank. Or, if you find your tank is fine, that you might know of another in your area who did lose their tank.

Maybe some other reefers could donate pumps, lights, etc? Anyone else? You could mail to me and I could deliver or mail directly to Chris and Jamie at a later date.

I will also deliver the tank, stand, and canopy to you when such a thing is reasonable, safe, and you are ready. I am a pastor and aside from the usual means of helping through food, money, etc., I thought what a neat thing to do for a fellow reefer. Huh, I just bought this two weeks ago and wasn't totally sure why. Now I know, it was for you or someone in Louisiana.

Here are some photos.

I know it doesn't replace a home, lost work, and many of the more important elements of life, but it might give you something to look forward to.

God Bless,

Lee Hoy

Dear Lee,

Words can not explain how wonderful you are for this. We can't accept the offer, though. We hear (unconfirmed) reports that our area was one of the better area's and that it weathered the storm very well. For that reason, we have every reason to believe that our home, tank, and most of our property is at least there. And for that reason I don't see how it would be fair for me to accept such a wonderful offer. I am sure, however, that someone else on lareefclub.com or reefcentral.com will be left without a home or with a damaged tank and this offer would be great for them.

You brought me to tears, all of you really, that you are all being so generous to us and everyone who has been effected by the hurricane. If all we have lost is some live stock, let that be OUR blessing. I know that there is a lot more people that have lost everything and that is people who really truly need this kind of help. I just wouldnt feel right accepting such an offer as this.

Lee, thanks again for such a wonderful offer, and thanks to all of you for being so courteous to us through these hard times.

We have the GREATEST news!!!! Alright, so we decide we had enough of this crap and that we were gonna try to get outselves back in town. I got a call from a friend anf a few other people on RC and lareefclun.com and everyone seemed to say the same thing. You can get back in!!! Alright! So we went. 7 hours later we were back in new orleans driving down our street and into our house. I stepped into the house and smelled a HORRID smell. My heart fell and I darted up the stairs to my bed room. Tried to turn the lights on and nearly slapped myself, there was no power (i dont know what the hell i thought.) I opened the sheets and windows and looked at the tanks. The bubbler on the clowns had DIED! I grabbed the food and tried feeding but they refused. I took a good look at them and they looked bad off.
The tank (my quarantine tank) was FILLED with fish crap. It had probably not had a bubbler on for days because the bubbler had died due to salt creep (bubbles were causing water to slowly gather and drip down the top and sides of the tank into the air pump unit). The fish were resting on the bottom of the tank, hardly swimming and looking very tired and weak. So, with haste I grabbed a plastic bag and began acclimating them into the main tank.
The main tank bubbler was still running and the temperature was at a hot 86 degrees. Everything inside of the tank looked great, EVEN the ricordea's! Alright, I was feeling good! I added the clowns after only 30 minutes of acclimation in fear that the water from the qt tank was so ammonia filled that they wouldnt have much time left. Immediatly they perked up! The gramma was kind of ****ed to see them around and it took a day for him to stop "screaming" (see pic above) at them. Soon after I added them to the main tank I fed the entire tank and everyone ate like pigs. I did a water change and the water parameters were put back into check. And I fixed the broken bubbler and added them both to the main tank.

After a few hours I hooked up the seadoo battery and got the actinics turned on for a half hour or so jsut to give the corals something to open up to. Everything looked alright, although the green ricordea did not like the water change very much so he looked like a ball of mush. Everyone was swimming and playing nicely so I took some video. I will see if I can get it up and running tonight but I am exhausted so it might have to wait. All day today I worked getting branches out of the yard and cleaning up the house.

We stopped by Jaime's grandmaw's house and took some pictures and cleaned up her yard as well. They had TONS of branches down and a tree had shed an 8" thick branch (if you want to call it that) onto her driveway, splitting her cable line. My dad, my mom, and I tore the brance off the tree (it was still connected a little) and cleared her yard and driveway of debris. We did the same at my grandmothers house and also my other grandmothers house. All in all it was a long day of hard labor, which I am not used to. I am glad to report that all of the houses we visited only had MINOR damage. Nothing like you are seeing deep in new orleans or in biloxi so for that I am thankful. And everyone I know made it out alive so I am thankful for that, too. Of course my fish are alive and kicking which makes me so happy it flipped my attitude from sadness and being moapy all day, to happy and excited.

Before I left I switched out the batteries in the bubblers and added a glass top to the main tank (to avoid what happened the first time with the pumps dying on me). Everything looked great and I was confident leaving them this time. Their tank temp was high but there was nothing I could do about that and it was staying constant so that was fine with me. On my way to our new hotel in baton rouge I sat on the phone with Jaime. She was still in destin but said she would be coming home to view her damages tomorrow and then would be headed out to see me. So that was more good news to add to my list.

All in all, everything is great! I want to take some time in the next few days to reach out and thank each and every one of you who reached out to us in our time of need on a more personal level (email, phonecall, pm) whatever I can do. But for now let me just say THANK YOU ALL! Everyone here really kept my spirits high and I am thankful to have you guys here. If there is anything I can do for any of you all, ever, dont hesitate to ask.

Thank you so very much for everything!
-Chris

Dude, that is GREAT news... I know a fishtank isn't much by comparison to some other losses, but I also realize our tanks tend to be our sanctuaries at times...

Glad to hear you had minimal damage and that things are not as bad in your area...

Thanks man! And thank you for your help. I tried to IM you last night but you weren't at your computer. Talk to you later.

Unbelievable, I would never have expected such news (how ironic given that is what I prayed for!!!). Wow, I know many others are still suffering and you still have a ways to go, but I am so glad to hear you are doing well and your home is not too bad off.

Thanks for letting us know.

Lee, let me thank you one last time. I appreciate the EXTREMLY generous offer and wish you and yours the best. Thank you so much for everything you have done to help me.

just a little update. We have been visiting the tank every 2 days and yesterday while we were visiting the air condition upstairs died on us. that caused the tank temp to rise again. Which in turn creates another problem. We are hoping that everything will fair well, but only time will tell for sure.

Today we went around looking through LFS by our hotel in Baton Rouge and for the second time visited Marks Marine. They are so nice and friendly over there. After looking through all of their tanks we came across what looked, to me, like a rbta. Jaime swore it was an anemone as well so we asked them. It did look a little like a frogspawn and I got real excited. They confirmed it was actually a frogspawn and i snatched it up immediatly. I have never seen a frogspawn this color, and i will take pics as soon as i can. It is a very dark rose color, like a dark maroon red. After talking to him a while he let it go for pretty cheap and told me he could keep it for me untill I was able to bring it back home to the tank.

Pics soon to come!

Alright guys, BIG BIG update. I guess I can start by saying hurricane Katrina really did a lot of damage to us, too. Just lot of indirect damage. But after all was said and done we ended up pulling through just fine. After my pair of clowns died during katrina I started wondering what to do next. A few days later the return pump on our system died! That was the bigger problem because we had no filtration and hardly no circulation with this pump being dead. After trying hard to get a pump overnighted to me I gave up and put my brain in action. I rigged a MJ1200 (good job marineland) to work as my return pump and it did surprisingly well!

I finally was able to order a new pump a week later and got a quietone 1200. All in all, it has been a great pump but it is not as quiet as they want you to think. Then came the visit to the LFS(s). Boy did they take a huge hit! Only one store remained unscathed throughout the entire storm and I was really amazed to see how well it faired.

We made friend with some locals who were having the same troubles we were with our tanks. We helped each other in whatever way we could and I ended up fish sitting for them for a week while they were moving their stuff to Dallas. They wanted to go a different route with their current 90 so they were looking to give it away! Immediatly Jaime started lighting up and would not keep quiet. All I heard all day was "PUFFER THIS PUFFER THAT" finally I built up the couraged and asked if we could inherit the 90. (Thanks Tim and Donna) So, I guess we ended up making good friends and aquired a new a new tank in the process. Needless to say, the tank was absolutly great and jaime is in the process of saving up to buy everything needed to start that puppy up!

Sadly our friend have moved, however. They had to move with their job and off to dallas they went! Although saddened to have some newfound reefer friends move away, we are happy they were able to move their fish sucessfully and we gave them some corals to start their new tank up :).

So after this long down time of not really buying much except the red frogspawn, we went crazy. Liveaquaria.com quickly made 400+ dollars off of us as we began to stock our tank with corals and new inhabitants. Our first shipment arrived with a TR Black Ocellaris and TR Orange Ocellaris. Sadly a few days after having them both together the Orange ocellaris bailed and jumped tank. So, I decided something needed to be done! A second TR Black Ocellaris was purchased and every since they have been working on pairing up. But they dont seem to be doing too well, one continually chases and nips at the other one (who is bigger than the chaser) and I just look at this like they are fighting. Who knows, as long as they both stay healthy and noone gets hurt I dont see much harm, they are both happy it seems.

Anyway, we also started visiting LFS the past week and are happy to see that a few have began getting shipments again! Onto the list of what we added since we last posted:
-Yellow Fiji Leather
-red frogspawn
-green w/ pink tip frogspawn
-red and green open brain
-teal lobophyllia
-red sea xenia
-yellow sea cucumber (which has split into two)
-tiger tail cucumber
-4 large tongan super nessarius
-a new teal ricordea
-crocea clam
-about 7 more lbs of live rock
-fire shrimp
-the two black clowns
-a hitchhiker green striped floresc mushroom (from the yellow fiji leather)

The tank is really coming together. I would post a few pics but the camera batteries died! I have it charging and plan to post a few pics in the next few hours...

So whats up, how has everyone been?

Well, I have some time so lets post up. I guess when katrina happened we were given the opportunity to meet some great reefers and make quick friends. We befriended Tim and Donna from New Orleans and they endedup GIVING us their 90g tank. They bought a new RR 90 and had planned on moving to texas. Well we took up the project of making the 90 a FOWLR. Along the way we realized if we are gonna do it... GO BIG. So we have been buying everything we need for the 90. It is almost comlpete... one coat of laquer (sp) on the stand and canopy and we will be ready to set it up. I do need to buy the rocks as well, but thats no trouble at all... I cant wait!

Yea the 20 is still running, and running strong. We have a wonderful pair of black ocellaris clowns (the female is all black with only a TINY tip of orange ont he nose) and our gramma is getting pretty darn fat. The clam is growing well, as well as the frogspawn. The only problem I see is that we had some redslime recently so I took the biowheel out of the tidepool. I am actually going barebottom in the 90... we shall see how that goes. I am also in the process of taking the substrate out of the 20L slowly.

What have you been up to spoon?

Nothing much pal, I work for an internet service provider now, tech support! Anyhow, my 20L is still going strong! No time to post right now but I will when I'm at work tomorrow. Glad to see you guys are doing well!
