lossman. i made a spear out of 3/8 dowel and a piece of sharped 1/8 wire on the end. works great on unwanted hitchhickers. the dowel is long enough so that your hands don't enter the tank.

I like that idea!!

LOL, Harley would have eaten it!!! :)

Bob, love the idea of the spear. I'm going to make one to have on hand when that crab decides to come out of his rock. But then again, since he lives in the same area that the pistol does, maybe I'll get lucky and the pistol will eat it. :)

We have a lot of this type sponge in orange, yellow and maroon that didn't die off:

But the real pretty stuff did eventually die.

Pat

your pictures impress me big time

Why thank you. I wish I had more of a variety to take. It's kind of boring always seeing the same pictures.

I have one and use it for lots of stuff, but not for spearing mantis. They are WAY too fast! I have caught all my unwanted critters with the bottle trap.

My fish are such hunters and pigs, I'd catch one of the fish in any trap before I'd catch an unwanterd critter. As it is, I have to let Clifford and Harley eat until the food sticks out of their mouths and they can't fit any more in there before I can get any food to the stars and anemone. They are disgusting pigs. LOL

That is the same reason why I haven't posted any more pics lately. :)

I went to the LFS this weekend and I almost bought a longnose hawkfish. Just nervous about it eating my porcelin crabs and cleaner shrimp. It could eat the peppermints and all the hermits and gorilla crabs it wanted to.

Here are some pics anyway!

LOL! I don't have any fish that could get into the bottle trap... well I suppose the percs could....anyway, it was fun to watch the flame angel and yellow tang try to get in. The garlic krill was driving them nuts! A serpant star put one arm all the way in trying to reach the krill, but backed off... They all took turns.... only the mantis got stuck.

Hello all,

have been reading this rather lengthy thread for some time now and have learned quit a bit, thanks to all of you that have posted. I myself have only received part one of the package and the wait is tough, glad to hear I'm not the only one suffering - makes the pain a little easier to take.

As I read about, and discover my own, gorilla crab stories, it seems I should be occupying my time waiting for the next stage with some sort of catch and release (some where else) program. I've heard about bottle traps but are there tricks? Is a purchased trap the better choice? No fish as of yet, so no competition for the bait that I'm aware of.

By the way, VERY impressed with all the pics, nice to see the light at the end of others tunnels, my wife is starting to think the second half of the package was in my imagination:rolleyes:

Eric

For gorilla crabs, a short glass with a piece of silverside inside works best. Just make sure the glass is deep enough that the crab won't be able to reach the bait by hanging on the lip of the glass. Just lean it up against the side of the rock at a slight angle and wait. :) I found pint jar worked best. The bottle trap works better for mantis, but you need to be there watching those as the mantis is a very quick learner and will get out of the trap if left in it too long. Happy hunting!! :)

I keep my power 1 setting about halfway and the power 2 setting all the way down. I also have a photo cell and when my lights go off it actomatically switches and stays on the power 2 setting. I have my pulse set so it switches about every 10 seconds.

BTW, I stopped and got the camera this morning! :D

Thanks for the reply - I'm expecting to get my unit later this month and will play with it...

While I'm back in this thread, it's coming up on 1 year with my TBS tank - so I thought I'd post a pic.

85945SWTankJan2006_012.jpg

As you can see I have about 1/2 my rock from TBS, the rest is a combo of hirocks base rock (ok, but not so impressive) and some LR from a local member of the Boston Reefers Society who was breaking down his tank.

You can tell the TBS rock - it's got a lot more color, more shades of coraline, and plenty of orange, white, and grey sponges still left. Note that this is after having removed and toothbrushed a lot of the TBS rock to get rid of a hair algae problem. I am very pleased with my TBS rock and 100% certain it's made my tank more interesting and colorful.

And, just two nights ago I lost an urchin (got stuck in a powerhead intake) and when I checked before bed I found a huge gorilla crab out and munching on the urchin. A quick thrust with an algae scraper ended his time in my tank - but still amazing that I'd never seen the big crab out, but clearly he's been there since day 1... Always surprises!

Best,

- Michael

We've never tried the glass trap. But I would think a shot glass is too small to capture anything except hermits.
It would have to be something deeper than that.
I don't think we have many gorillas left. Bob took most of them from us. :D
So far, I only see one small one, although there are probably more hiding somewhere.

Nirol, I can't believe you found a mantis after so long, without ever seeing it. Most people have seen theirs, even if they couldn't catch it.
