Heading to Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head area at the end of May. I am only an Open Water and Nitrox trained diver; however, I dive atleast once a week as a volunteer zoo diver in both fresh and salt water. Anyone have recommendations on dive sites and dive operators in the Outer Banks area?

I've never been but I'm looking forward to your trip report! Most of the dive sites are pretty far from shore. Do you know what the water temps will be? I know the end of summer/early fall is when the Gulf Stream really makes a difference.

You can actually access several wrecks from shore. They are 200 yards or so from the beach and the dive operators have inexpensive guided tours to them. I went to several dive facility sites and they preferred advanced certification for boat dives. Besides the zoo dives, I have only been in Western Pennsylvania quarrys. I'm use to colder water but have never been on a boat dive or in the ocean.

Nice to know there're closer wrecks than the "major ones" which are a long boat ride off shore. Are you driving down? It might be too early to see "strays", but let us know what you see!

See if you can find a trip to the Indra wreck out of moorehead city. This wreck is in about 60-70 feet of water, don't need advanced open water to do it. Dove this wreck in August. It has a lot of corals/growth encrusting it, most are 6-10 inches tall. There are 1-2 large bull sharks that hang out all the time, and a lot of other fish around it.

No one was going into the wreck on our dive, just over and around it.

Its about 45 minutes out from shore.

I've been talking to the Outer Banks Dive Center via facebook. I'm probably going to give them a try. Thank you for the offer. Do you dive?

I wish! I keep saying I want to get certified, sea sick tends to make me cautious though. Hes a good guy, exactly who I would have recommended! Also, the aquarium allows you to dive in their shark tank, the graveyard of the atlantic. Its indoors but pretty cool none the less. Have fun and be glad youre coming in may as opposed to say now...I need some spring badly!
