Outside the box idea ... Inside the tank.

I was just doing some brainstorming on new ideas for lighting. Has anyone put LEDs in their tank? I see people float canopies, spotlight tanks, and do all kinds of different lighting to hide the fixture. I have never seen one in the tank. My thought was to take a hear sink and some LEDs and build an acrylic box to house the leds. The box will float on the surface of the tank and the LEDs will sit in the box. light spread would be great because you wouldn't need optics. The LEDs would cool because the heat sink is exposed to the air. It would keep evaporation down and it would keep fish in. air exchange would happen in sump.

No more lights on or over the tank. It might look nice or it might look like crap but it would be worth a shot.

Tunze has made some low power underwater LEDs but yeah, your main problem is corraline and normal algae and just gunk in general.
