overflow box going dry

could i drill a few small holes toward the bottom so if the water gets below the teeth while im not home it wont go dry,

I do not understand your problem. Is this happening in the main tank or in your sump? If you have a return pump filling your main tank constantly, then the water should not get lower in the display tank. All evaporation lose should happen in the sump. If you are running the sump dry, it will likely hurt your return pump. If that is the case, then you need to top off your sump more often. I top off manually ever other day and a more permanent solution is an auto top off system.

i dont mind toping off it just seem like it goes down quick & i dont want to be lowif im gone, i guess it wont go low over night, so if i top off every day even if its just alittle there wont be a problem i just thought with 2 small holes close to the bottom there will always be water in it

im not sure how drillin holes will effect the prodution of the skimmer, in other work im not sure how much water it will draw from the hole as oposed to the surface water.

so you dont think water would even go in the holes, i still want it to go through the teeth, but just in case

Wait. Why do you need a overflow box just to go to a HOB skimmer? Just hang the skimmer on the back of the tank and no more overflow box. If I read this correctly you don't have a sump or anything correct?

Maybe I'm missing something.

or it could just be i dont no, the skimmer came with the overflow box, i thought it kept the film off the top of the water, but if i dont need it i would rather not have it in, i see film rather its on there or not, i just thought sence it came with it it must work better with it on, i could take it off, are there two differnt kinds of overflow boxes, im just talking about the black one that you can see hanging on the skimmer, i put it in the tank under the skimmer & tighting the screw to hold it on,
