Overflow boxes

I have been researching for a while now and have almost decided on drilling my tank for overflow. While goggling overflow boxes I came upon a bunch of these boxes. What are the advantages/disadvantages of using one of these? Is it strictly aesthetics?

Can I reasonably use one of these draining to a refugium and then have my return plumbing come from the pump, over the back side of the tank and then into the tank?

Those work, but will never be as reliable as a drilled tank. Also if you DIY it you have the option of using a "bean" or "herbie" style drain, both of which are superior to other single hole drains.

Hang on back have worked for people for years without failing. However they're more maintenance, they have a higher probability of failure and they take up more room because of the box behind the tank.

A drilled overflow depends on water running downhill. A siphon HOB overflow depends on water running uphill. I always go for the "...water running downhill." option.

jmo,

If you were considering drilling your tank, do it. It's the better solution. The siphon overflow box can work well, but as Agu said, they do require regular maintenance. If you use one, there are several ways to add to the 'U' tube in order to help it maintain it's siphon and thus make it more reliable. Good luck either way.

Look at a Glass-Holes overflow kits. Reasonable price; very well made; take up little space; comes with everything, including the drill bit.
