Overflow flushing

Thanks for all of the responses guys. The sound in combo with the microbubbles issue has made me decide that I am probably in need of a smaller pump. Also, because I didn't spend as much at the swap as I was allowing for, I have a little extra space in the budget.

hey brian, i dunno if a mag5 interests you but even if it doesnt shoot me a pm with how much youd like for the pump. talk to you later and thanks for the sweet frags!<~~~steve

p.s- if you wanna plumb up the tank like the options stated above let me know, i can make the drive on my off day. i was a plumber/parts wholesaler for the past 7 years up until recently so i can turn a few tricks with pvc :) lemme know<~~~steve

Some more food for thought....

I just discovered tonight that without a dorso standpipe, I can make my over flow flush or be perfectly smooth by simply positioning my downspout hose differently. If the hose goes straight down into the sump without going down and curving back up, it doesn't flush. If I have a sag in the hose where the water has to go back up before going to the sump, a siphon is created and thus flushing. Dorso fixes this issue, but if the hose is positioned correctly, you won't have flushing. At least this is a fact in my setup.

I don't have any pics... sorry. I don't know that I'd want anyone seeing my handiwork anyway :) It's ugly. I'm only concerned that it works though. I think that the small modifications I made tonight to the original design will fix my bubble issues.

First of all, Phu gave me some nice flexible hose that will let me change the angle the pipe enters the sump. Second, I added a "landing area" for the return water to hit as it enters my bubble trap. The idea is to keep the water from entering the sump and heading straight to the bottom full of any air it pulls into the overflow. The next thing I did was to put a baffle just past the bubble trap that will force the water coming in to the top of the skimmer chamber where I expect it will slow down enough to lose any air that made it out of the trap. Without the baffle, the water was heading straight across the bottom of the tank to the opening for the next section and was taking any microbubbles that were in the water with it. I followed the design of a sump I already had, but I didn't take into account the fact that I had a similar output pump, but a much smaller sump, thus water currents moved much faster through it.

I'm getting a Mag5 tomorrow and I'm going to try it out. If it works I'll go through the trouble of posting pictures. My priority right now is getting this thing running. If you saw my kitchen, you'd understand.

Brian... I know you have that qo4000. I will caution you against useing it in a closed loop after you replace it with one of a bit less volume. I had one and wow.. that thing moves alot of water. Somewhere like 1400gph.

Mine was extremely loud and chattered unless I had some head pressure behind it. also, it will get extremely hot. mine melted the carpet under it!!

I actually swapped the quiet one for a mag5 and have everything up and running now. I still have a little bubble problem, but I think it will go away as the plumbing "breaks in" and my cheato ball puts on a little size. If it continues to give me trouble after a bit, I'll have to work on cutting down the number of bubbles coming out of my skimmer, which seems to be a big contributor to the problem.

...in this hobby, tinkering is always required.

so is the mag5 doing better for you brian? i underestimated that pump..... i have it throttled back ATLEAST 40%. with it wide open for any length of time i would assume it would blow my sump apart from the insane flow rate. i can only imagine youre headaches when trying to make it work on the corner :) anyways i hope its remedied now, talk to you soon!<~~steve

The mag is definitely working a lot better. I caulked one of the holes shut that I had put in the durso and was thinking about doing the other one so that it would be back to stock. It sucks to hear that even you're having to throttle it back that much. If it's not working good for you, let me know and we'll figure something out so that both of us can get what we need.

Those pumps definitely seem to put out a lot of water and, in fact, I would venture to guess more than the ~1000 gallons their rated at (as Lindsey said). I have no proof of that, but either that quiet one was underrated or my eheim is overrated (or a combo of both).

brian, with the ball valve it does fine. im just glad we got the corner running. no worries! talk to you soon<~~steve
