Overflow noise question

you sure it doesn't reduce down to a 1" bulkhead with 1.5" piping? just asking because this is how my used tank was setup, I seen 1.5 " pipping and assumed thats what it was but it reduced to 1" at bulkhead.

I plan to use the return for a extra overflow and bring the returns over the back of the tank, Im thinking it still wont be enough for the mag 9.5 return pump.
 
I had the same problem with my overflow too at one point. It turned out to be a 1/16" 0r 1/32" unlevel (i forgot which) Once I evened it out the gurgling stopped. 2 LFS stores near me picked out the problem without even seeing my tank..
 
When I plug the hole it goes into a full siphon until it drains the overflow chamber water and the breaks the chamber fills again and starts over
 
It's not getting enough air. I just went through the same thing with the new tank I setup yesterday. I have a durso on mine which is almost the same as your stand pipe. Instead of there being two elbows to give you that upside-down U like you have I have a tee with an elbow going down, look up durso you'll see what I mean. Some people suggest putting a tube down the hole at the top so I tried that and I got same thing that is happening to you. I just removed the tube and no more toilet flushing, it was terrifying the air. If your stand pipe is glued to the bulk head you may need to replace the bulk head to fix your problem.
 
it shouldnt be glued frank , i dont want you to break anything but a little twist right and left it should free up , you may need more air , you dont need a huge turnover rate , take something and make sure those holes are clean , sometimes the salt clogs it up , you should hear the air being sucked in . adjust the flow untill you hear a nice steady air intake , almost a quiet whisle sound . if you can free up that pipe get another dorso pipe . they are noisey no matter what , its a small box . i want to say 750gph? maybe i am wrong . mine is louder than i would like and I have tried all the tricks , i will give you a tip , turn up the tv .:D

Is your drain line submerged into the sump water? If so, this could cause back pressure and cause that burping and flushing sound. Either cut the drain short of the water line, or only submerge it an inch or so below the water.
 
Also, unless you have a basement sump, a mag 18 is way too big. I have a mag 5 as a return pump. Less energy consumption, heat, and noise. No gate valve needed. Most guys/gals use a mag 7 or 9.5 on a standard 75g which is acceptable too.

how deep does your drain pipe sit in the sump?
do you have a valve on the drain pipe that you can reduce the flow?
careful if you try to remove it, it looks like its glued from the pic. the purple stuff looks like the primer for pvc glue.

i had same issues, i cut the pipe to sit about and inch into my sump, i cut back the flow to about half. you can not even hear the the thing. i have the same type drain.
i think your problem might be back pressure. check out the link. it explains it.

Careful restricting the overflow with a valve. If that gets clogged with a snail cheato crap you will have a floooooooood

I agree with my2girls that a mag 18 is way to big for a 75gal. On my 120, I use a mag 12 which does more than an adequate job. Although some pumps can be restricted with a gate valve, I understand this could be harmful to the mag pumps.
 
Thanks everyone for your replies I've been away for a while lol. I ran the reef central calculator so the mag 18 is just right for my set up i'm running a basement sump so its got about a 12 foot run with a 9 foot rise with a few turns so I'm sure its not overkill plus its teed off to run my reactors and huge. You will all be glad to hear problem solved everyone who said it wasn't sucking in enough air was right i drilled a larger hole added air line tube a bamm silence. Man is the wife happy LOL now i can go back to shopping and adding more frags lol I wanted to make sure my system was running properly first, proper turnover, proper skimming good parameters. Even though i think i might need to add two small power heads to take care of some dead spots between my arches other than that i think I'm all set. thanks again everyone
 
Glad to hear you figured it out. I just went through the same thing with my wife and the overflow noise! I had to raise the level of the water in the drain chamber to stop the "waterfall effect."
