Overflow Noise

how can i make my overflow quieter? it is just a PVC with two holes in the middle and an open top. i would like not to use bio balls because i do not want a nitrate factory in the back of my tank. any suggestions of what you are using?

I made a couple of these, man its amazing how some things work so great and cost so little. 5$ at lowes and was very pleased.
