overflow question too big?

a freind has a 55gal tank that he want to add a sump too, tank is not RR. an overflow has come available for sale but is a 1200 gal, with 2x1" bulkhead outlets.

is this to much for a 55? couldnt he plug one outlet to get less flow?
what are your thoughts?

It is an overkill but could be used.

I like to add a gate valve to mine which makes it very silent. The second outlet could be setup as an emergency overflow.

It will only drain water that is pumped into the tank. That being said, as long as he chooses a return pump that is appropriate for how much turn-over he wants there will be no issues.

For example, is his return pump is pushing 500gph, then that's going to be the turn-over. HTH,

I agree.. you can also do like I did with that overflow you have and cap off one of the two drains... should still have plenty of flow with just one drain.

I would use the other for an emergency overflow in case one of them gets clogged. Could end up thanking yourself later for it. Just make it 2" taller than the main one.

I was thinking the same thing Rhett... just run a seperate pipe all the way down otherwise you will hear water noise out of it.

would you run 2 seperate pipes into the sump or Y them together like i did?

The dude I bought it from plumbed it as a T bringing the two together into one going into the drain section of the sump. He gave me the plumbing he did for it so I may try that.

Thanks again for all of your help brohim.

you verry well could run two pipes to the sump you would just have to run another ball valve on that box to slow the water down cause it has so much flow out of that overflow box

Thanks. I think I may leave it how you have it plumbed. My sump will be so little that I'd rather control the amount of water going into it from splashing all over the place. I may leave it as a T and shut one of the pipes off and have it flow from the other.

Thanks again for the hookup. Lemme know what your bud says about building the sump and if you have anything else I can take off your hands.
