overflows done right

I picked up my new tank and it is not drilled (yet) I have never done this and am understandably terrified of the process.

I want to do the exact same thing with my overflows that Aron (savageajc) did with his build. I love that they are on the back and totally unobtrusive with the rest of the tank. Props to you on those things, I have been inspired since I first saw them.

Can anyone tell me what tools I will need, what to take into consideration before starting and other helpful hints that I am sure I haven't thought of?

Glass Hole saw for the size needed for the bulk heads.

Tape the area to cut,
PATIENTS
Water to keep the hole saw cool

Put a towel on the inside to catch the cut out piece

Drill Slow

Thanks Evo, Ive been looking for him the last few times I was in SEA but havent seen him.

Scubabum I will keep that in mind and when I have the materials I need I will hit you up.

I spent a lot of time yesterday looking into this and it is something that I would definitely rather have someone else help me with.

I don't think Im going to be able to do the exact same kind of overflow that Savage has because my tank is not rimless and it looks like his was cut at the top for the overflow.

It looks like Im going to have to drill the bottom and put up the baffles. Where does one buy the black acrylic shield that covers the drain? I haven't seen them for sale on any of the sites.

No problem, there is always a risk involved in drilling. I had a hard time working up the courage to do it myself. After you do one or two it's not that bad. I also tape the back side of the hole and use plumbers putty to make a ring to hold the water in the area being drilled

You need to make sure that the bottom glass is not tempered, if it is you will have to drill the back of the tank

I might have to try the 3d glasses computer trick but the tank is really heavy so if there is an easier way then tipping it on its side Im all ears.
