overkill pump?

I have an inline/submersible pump http://www.dannermfg.com/store/products/danner/pid-02670.aspx that my parents used for a year in a freshwater pond. It has an 18' head and it pumps 4800gph. It also has 1.5" outlet.

Now I want to use it to be the return pump from my sump to a 50 gal display. There is no flow control on the pump itself. Can i control the flow with a ball valve or is it too risky?

a ball valve will work fine on the output side of the pump, all that does is add headloss to the pump…i.e. adding a valve and dialling it backs turns your 9-10' vertical height to a 15-20' height etc….it depends how much you dial it back…

those pumps are extremely power hungry…you may want to look at buying a DC pump instead, for considerable cost savings in power. RLSS, Speedwave, and Jebao all make large DC pumps which will work well for you...

There are far better options out there. That pump is way too much for a 50g.

+1 to the above comments. You can use it if you dial it back, but it will waste a lot of energy and you may have problems with it overheating your whole tank.
