Oversized return pump.

I need to oversize my return pump for future expansion. Is it better to slow down the flow with a gate valve or simply bleed off the excess into the sump. I'm considering and Iwaki pump with lots of head pressure.

I've looked at the Vectra, nice pump. At this point it's reliability hasn't been well established. I go back and forth.

I'm not a pump expert, but I don't see the problem with restricting the flow with a valve (Except that adjusting the pump would save electricity). Like, it seems like it would "feel" the same to the pump as head pressure does.

Anyway, my used tank I'm upgrading into came with an iwaki (American motor) it's loud af compared to the ehiem submersible I was running. I'm getting an eheim 1260 asap. But if noise isn't an issue like the sump is going in a basement, the iwaki is a real slick design with a great reputation for handling head pressure and long lifespan. There's other good ones too. I think you're on the right track buying the best pump you can for the future tank and just throttling it with a valve.

The noise issue is one of the reasons I've been looking at the Vectra along with the variable speed. I saw Mark's video and it looks like a very durable pump. But I know several forum members who have had some issues although I don't know they were operator error or if something was wrong with the pump.

Just my bit of input here is the following: I installed the Vectra M1 in my 120 gallon. I had an Eheim which was a reliable pump but vibrated to the point I could hear a humming in the basement or even on the same floor with no ambient noise. That is gone.

I did have an increase in water noise due to the flow but I'm personally fine with that. I also have to keep it at its lowest setting, 1 LED lit, or it quickly can be too much flow for the tank if I go above 3 lights on the controller. This is with 1 inch drain and return lines.

All that said I am only putting it out there as some food for thought. I am ecstatic with the pump and don't regret the purchase at all. It's only been two weeks but have had zero issues and it would appear my fish are happier with the increased water turn over rate.

Oversized return pump.

Internally for me. In a sump directly below my display tank in a stand. Nothing through floors or anything.

I originally intended to get the L1 because of the usual bigger is better mantra. But in glad I didn't or I would have had to tear it out and go get the M1 anyway as the L1 would have been too much.
