Owners of large acrylic tanks

I just rinse them well under the faucet. They come out of the box with barely any smell so I'm really just looking to rinse off anything they may have picked up during production.

I've seen them at most of the major grocery chains out here in SoCal. Beyond that they're available online from any number of places

Has anyone built a large acrylic tank with a thin sheet fo glass on the outside to prevent scratches? with kids and cats and my own clumsiness, I thought perhaps this would help keep from scratching constantly.

To repair minor scratches. You can attach a piece of wet dry sand paper to a magnet (say 800 grit depending on the scratch) and go to town.......

Would you not then need to polish it with something after using sandpaper? Thats the one thing Ive been so worried about with my new tank is scratches.
