ozone bringing pH down....help?

what'scoral

BioMedical Engineer
My tank parameters have been i bit crazy and I've been trying to stabilize them naturally. So i currently have 125g with a wet/dry, skimmer,LR DSB light LPS 8fish or so. My ORP was 155 when I checked it for the first time the otherday with my new ACIII and my pH7.79. So I bought an Ozotech 100mg/hr and connected to my ventri of my skimmer and added active carbon. well 24hrs later my ORP is 217 and my pH is 7.58. My ORP meter is brand new and my pH meter is kinda old but I did a calibration.

My question is why is the Ozone lowering my pH? I know my pH is lower but my working on that with some kalk.

more tank paramete
750g/hr pump
and 1200g/hr powerhead
proclear wet/dry with builtin skimmer
calcium is 400 mag is 1200
dKH 12

anyways its my pH probe that is wack....so i have a new one on the way and i replaced my wet/dry with a sump/fuge. no more built in wet/dry skimmer but an Aqua C 120

So the pH is not low?

In general, ozone does not impact pH directly. What it can do, at least when first used, is convert what might be a pool of relatively unpalatable organic molecules in the water to ones that bacteria can metabolize more readily, and they produce CO2 as a result. If that is happening, it will go away after a while of use.

I agree with both Randy & Snorvich,

Another point... You state that your controller is new. That also means a new ORP probe. These probes take quite some time before they settle in, at least 2 weeks. So during that time ORP readings should not be replied upon.

Amen. Especially, start ozone slow (actually any new program). Your ORP probe needs to be calibrated AND it needs to adjust as HookedOnReefing states.

thanks for the advise...I went over to my LFS and bought a new pH probe its been almost a week now and my ORP is about 315 everyday it goes up and up. As far as my pH its around 7.8-8 I will check my alk today and if needed I will drip in kalk to bring pH up.

well i didnt use anything to calib my ORP probe. Manual of the AC3 claims that they come from the factory already to go.

Do you think i should by some solution and calib my ORP??

It may or may not need calibration. If you see a weird reading, I'd calibrate it. Often they are fine, but sometimes can get way off, especially if they get coated with junk.
