Ozonizer for my 60 gallon reef

On the eruo-reef website they don't recomend ozone at all in a reef tank. They cliam ozone will rapidly break down organics to nitrates and Phos. We want to instead remove the organics before they break-down, any thoughts??

I have tried ozone, zeovit and just nothing. In my tank ozone works the best! I think it is safe to say if ozone did break down organics into nitrate and phosphate there would be much more algae on the glass etc. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY NOT THE CASE WHEN OZONE IS USED. As a matter of fact if you do a little poking around you will find other reefers talking about low algae with ozone.

In my tank I keep the redsea ozone generator at 100 mg for my 400 gal tank, set at 400. You will find that the generator is a great way to get it up that high. Most likely it will remain that high with little or no ozone eventually. My tank runs about 420 with out ozone. It is a great tool to get it up that high. No regrets with ozone.

Randy I am not bashing your statement, I also read this same statement and was quite concerned. But the proof is in the algae and the brilliance of the water.

So can my er rs 8-2 be used and if so how would i hook it up? What size and brand ozonizer do you recommend for a new tank I'm setting up, which will be 90g + 45 gallon sump?

TY

Yes you can use ozone with that skimmer. You just have to hook up a airline from the ozone generator to the skimmer airline.

As for brand...50 mg red sea seems to do fine. You might want to get 100mg if you think you would want to run more ozone. Some people like to run a lot more than i do.

So I would hook it up to the air intake of my SP3 pump? Can that do any harm to the pump seals? Also is there any kind of advantage to running it on the skimmer, or on a ozone reactor or directly onto the tank?

I am running o3 at 20mv on my 75 using my aquac (with air pump). This is nothing new with the age old debate. Ozone yes/no.

Running it in the skimmer prevents you from buying yet more equ.

Kb-smoker, you said in your post that anything over 450 orp is bad for your tank. I've always heard anything over 350 is that amistake on your part or mine?

I've been running ozone for a few months now and love the difference it makes in my tank. The water cleared up enough for me to notice and I never thought of my water as anything but clear before I got the ozonizer. If you do get one spend the $ to get one w/ the built in orp controller. I'd buy the probe seperately because I've had bad luck w/ RedSea probes.

Great thread!

Question: Everything I've read, so far, demands carbon filtration of both effluent going back to the tank and air released at reactor or skimmer. No one has mentioned carbon filtration of ozonated air. Do you guys filter the air? If so how do you do it? Can anyone post some pics of there Ozone generator setup? How often do you replace the carbon for effluent and how often for air? Does your ozonizer run 24/7 or does the controller turn it on and off often? Do you smell ozone in your tank/sump room? I've read about nausea and headaches has anyone experienced any?

Thanks
ORdy

I will say this, and you can take it any way you want. Ozone in large quantities in confined spaces is bad. I use carbon to allow the water to pass through before it hits the sump. Thats it. I don't filter the air and I don't worry about it either. At its worse I think I smelled a little bit when I first set it up, because it ran steady for the first few days. Now I have mine set at 10mg/h and it still only runs for a few hrs a day. My advise to you is this, if you are very concerned about the effects of ozone, don't get one. The benefits of it are still debatable. I did notice my tank got clearer and the cyano I had did disappear, but I don't think the ozone cleared it up by itself.

The orp controller built into my unit turns it on and off at specified levels

I don't use the air drier

I don't use an air pump. I just let the needlewheel suck it out.

I do use ozone resistant tubing, but just cause I bought it when I got the ozonizer.

I don't smell ozone anymore unless I stick my head into the sump just about.

I never felt any affects from it and neither has my wife or kids.

Setup for me is simple. Plug in the ozonizer, plug in the orp, and set the desired end level and output. Easy as 1 2 3.

HTH

Happy reefing

Josh

Can this work with a diy calcium reactor? Or should i just by one. Tank soon to b 350g mixed corals with 75 sump. If I should just buy 1 which do you guys recomend?
