It's a spearer. Really awesome looking right now. The thing is, with a P. ciliata they change color pattern to suit their environment. In your tank it will slowly change color after each molt to camoflauge with your tank. Look on this forum and you'll find some pictures of them. Email me if you would like it.

Hi Fidel,
I just noticed that you shipped the shrimp 2nd day air. Is he going to be ok???? I thought livestock had to be shipped overnight. It gets in the low 50s here at night time.

Well, I just got him today at 11:30. I still have him aclimating but he is not doing good. He is staying in a curled position.
I have to say Fidel that he is a gorgeous mantis, but I am a little upset with how he was shipped.
I had emailed you asking if he would be shipped wed for thurs delivery. I then found out on thursday that he was sent 2nd day. I was a little upset as I had to cancel a appointment I had with a client to stay home to receive him. Also, it gets in the low 50's here at night and it was 65 until 11am. I wish I would have known that you were shipping 2nd day. I would have paid the extra to go overnight. This hobby isnt all about money its about these gorgeous creatures that have no control over how we handle them. I would buy from you again Fidel, the packing was nice but next time I would like it shipped overnight even if I had to pay more. You should have also checked the weather for my zip code to make sure it isnt cold. Not all of us are in gorgeous Hawaii (Even though it would be nice to live there!!)
I do not know if he is going to pull through. I am hoping so. The PH in the container was 7.13 and the temp was 62
I know that these guys are tuff little buggers but we will have to see if he will pull through. I will keep everyone posted. I am going to be doing a really slow aclimation and I put a small piece of pvc in there so if he went in it he would feel safer. But has not gone in it. Just sits there on his back, curled and fanning his swimmers.

Update - Just got home and he is still curled up in a ball in the corner of the tank. I looked closely at him and he is still alive he is fanning his swimmers still.
Is this normal? When I got my peacock from ffexpress they were fine and never curled up, I never saw this before.

Sickboy, I hope he pulls through. I remember your Norman very well. Now I know how it feels to watch this!
Update - He hasnt moved from the spot and position he is sitting in (Pics #816 and #817) in the last 6-8 hours.
I don't know if it was the 2 days of shipping with the conditions of the weather or maybe he was getting thrown around real bad in that ziplock tub. I remember when I got the package from fedex I could feel and hear the water moving around when I was just walking into my fish room. I had to hold it real carefully not to make it move. Makes me wonder if he got thrown around during shipping and he kept banging the walls. It also might have been nice if he was placed in another small container with holes drilled to buffer some of the movement.
Also, Fidel for your future shipments you should put on the box live fish, somewhere as these boxes can be thrown from one person to another at the warehouse. God I can only imagine what he went through. :eek2:

I wanted to make sure that people weren't getting the message that Fidel (Fcamdog) is a bad person to deal with. He by far isn't. If I had made him seem like he was, please understand that wasnt my intention. Before the Mantis Shrimp even arrived I had email him about the shipping and he told me he would send me out another one if it arrived DOA or died.
If he ever has anymore Mantis Shrimps available I would recommend buying from him. He is very prompt. I made payment on tuesday and next day I received tracking number.
I posted what I say about the shipping because I wanted to make sure that whoever the buyer or shipper is a weather check should be done so the proper precautions are taken.

I appreciate the clarification. I will always try to keep the animals #1. As for the yellow ones. P. ciliata addapt their coloring to their surroundings. Since I collect in Kaneohe Bay they tend to be the same color and the one I sent you. I have never seen a yellow one. I have, however, sent one just like yours and in it's new tank became almost all green with white tips in about 3 molts. Basically, your tank set-up dictates their color. It would be interesting to see how we could manipulate their surroundings to get a certain color morph???

Can someone please post some pictures or videos of a P. ciliata. I've been trying anywhere to get any type of spearer mantis. And another question can you keep snails or hermit crabs with spearers since the cant really "smash"? Can they kill crabs?
