P.E. at night

I've had my 37 w. 29 sump/ fuge for about 2 years now my corals grow great sps and lps, during the day my polyp extension is very good on almost every coral. So this isn't a complaint but more of a concern my polyp extension is literally worse at night no lie. Any reason for this I thought at night is when they feed so they extend more. I do feed my tank fish/corals heavy but I also do a 10g water change every week religiously.

Hi Brandon, welcome to RC. I wouldn't be concerned about the lack of PE at night as long as everything looks happy during the day. With the exception of a couple acro pieces that actually extend more at night, everything (including other acro) has always closed up in my tank at night. A couple times I got out the flashlight in the middle of the night wondering if some critter was irritating them but nothing was seen. I'd suspect that since you feed your fish/corals heavy the coral have grown accustomed to being open during the day. With the heavy feedings & 10g weekly water changes, do you keep on eye on Nitrate readings? Do you ever feed after the lights go out?

For the most part it is natural for corals not to have polyp extension at night. It may also be very helpful to know just what type of corals we are talking about and a clear understanding of what polyp extension means for specific corals.
