P.E. Mysis Yah or Nay?

Freezer is getting a little empty, time to place an order with F & S. I haven't used P.E. Mysis in a few years, but was thinking of going back to it. I have no doubt it's a better quality than the other "leading brands", I just found the havoc it reeks on the skimmer to outweigh the good perhaps.

Curious other people's thoughts that have similar type systems.

My lfs tells me they use pe mysis for their hard to feed fish. I found that appealed to some of my fish and not to others. They're pretty big though...relatively. If your fish are medi to large they should love them.

I have been using pe mysis for around a year and all of my tank inhabitants like it. 6 different tangs, clownfish, brittle star, large polyp soft corals and mushrooms eat me too. When I first brought my clown tang home he was finicky and pe mysis was all he would eat. Now he is hardy and eats everything.

I feed it every morning, and if it is a FOWLR then nutrients are as much of a concern for you so go for it.
And for smaller fish I just chop it up into small pieces. One of the first foods I feed my QT when I get a new fish.

I swear by PE for all of my display tanks. Just rinse it after you thaw it. It will help you avoid cloudy water and your skimmer going nuts afterwards.

great stuff...high in protein and a great food to throw into any weekly diet...you can always mince it after thawing for smaller fish to eat...

Why does this particular product reek havoc on the skimmer? I just bought this product myself for the first time and I'm trying to understand why this happens. Is this common for certain types of food? Thx!!

It's much more oily/fatty than other mysis... This interferes with the foam production in the skimmer.

1) It's not necessary to rinse the mysis

2) preferred method with flat packs is letting the fish eat directly off the frozen piece, directly ingesting a high percentage of the Omega 3 & Omega 6s.

3). When cubes or mysis chunks are thawed in a cup of fresh or saltwater, it is probably best to pour off most of the surfactant oils, as they typically go over the overflow, shut down the protein skimmer (if using one) and do not get into the fish. This is esp important with smaller nano reefs that continue to trend w high popularity.
