P. Jawfish hides when powerhead is on

Hey Reef Central!

I've been having an interesting conundrum with my small Pearly Jawfish (one inch long). I got him off of Live Aquaria about 10 days ago. He looks pretty healthy, despite being very stressed out the first day. He began to build his burrow in the 4 inches of crushed coral and sand I had placed in the corner for him. He was doing well in the there for a couple days before it collapsed on him. After that he decided to relocate under one of my liverocks in 1.5 inches of sand. He seems to be doing alright here with the exception that he hides in his burrow literally 24 hours a day, covered in rocks and shells. At first I had assumed his burrow isn't deep enough and that is stressing him out. I've been building a tube I can fill with a sand/crushed coral mix substrate (more sand this time, hopefully no collapsing), so hopefully he has something more stable and deeper to build his burrow in.

I was kind of surprised yesterday, however, to find that my issue might not be about the size of his burrow at all. I've been knocking the rocks off once or twice a day to feed him. I do this with the pumps off so his food doesn't blow away. Yesterday I left the pumps off the use the restroom. I came back to find that not only had he not covered his hole yet, but he was floating half an inch above his hole, looking around like a jawfish should. He stayed this way for a while. When I turned the pump back on, he looked around extra quick and shot back into his hole, and began covering it with rocks. When I turned the pump off, he stopped, and came back out. With my other pump, he reacts similarly, but only retreats into his hole a little bit, and doesn't cover it with rocks. Could it be flow? Sound? I thought maybe leaked current, but I have a grounding cable and haven't detected any shocks with my fingers in the tank.

I have an Innovative Marine Nuvo 10g with the stock pump (Set to 92GPH) and a Koralia Nano 240GPH. The jawfish reacts more poorly to the stock pump despite the lower rating. I will admit to being a flow/deadzones noob.

I suppose I should also mention that all of his other tankmates are doing great seemingly fine. The purple duncans from LA have been a little on the brown side since I got them and never colored up. I associated this with the possibly low stock lighting on the nuvo 10. probably not related but I never really know.

Has anyone heard of anything like this happening?

He might be a little over 1.5, dunno. STILL pretty small. Haven't really been able to take a ruler to him or anything

Hope I can get this figured out at some point. Maybe he's just little enough that fighting the current can be rough? He came out on his own earlier for a little while. He covered it back up after about an hour.

Jawfish are timid little critters, at least until they become comfortable with their new homes. Given time, thought, they can become much more bold and brave.

as stated jawfish are timid at first, he probably feels and hears the vibrations of the powerhead sarting up and given the size of the tank and the noise it probably startles him

Alright guys! Thanks for the reply. I'll wait a while and see what happens. He's uncovered his hole twice of his own volition today, which is new. So maybe things will start looking up! He's awfully cute.

Post some pictures if you can!

I also have a Nuvo 10 and I'm curious to see how yours looks. What else is in the tank besides the jawfish and the duncan?

Hey! I'll post pictures if I can get around to it. The inhabitants are currently as follows:

Pink dwarf feather duster
Porcelain crab (the bluefish peaceful kind, not anemone crab)
Duncan coral
Pearly jawfish
2 nerite snails
1 Florida cerith
1 nassarius

I took the extra substrate out of the tank that was piled in the corner, so he has 1-1.5 inches of sand depending on where he is. The jawfish left his burrow and is currently playing around behind some rubble rock in the tank. I'm hoping to get his custom tube in the tank this weekend. Hopefully he will like it more than the substrate pile.
