Painting acrylic

I have a tank I built an external overflow for and never painted the back wall. Now I have to paint the inside of the tank. Is this going to be something I can do. What paint and techniques do you guys suggest?

Thanks
Patrick

I would not suggest that you paint the inside of the tank, as the paint will likely find its way OFF of the acrylic and into your water. I painted the outside of my acrylic tank with regular latex paint and it worked OK. spray paint would likely work too, but has a tendency to get overspray everywhere else on your tank. Hope this helps.

krylon fusion is supposed to stand up to the test of time in a reeftank. i painted my acrylic overflow with it but its still early.

people in the DIY forum swear by it

the trouble is I have a external overflow so painting the back would be tricky and you would still see the inside of the overflow.

Spray paint sounds messy. Is the Krylon spray?

And thanks for the suggestions.

I would still not paint the inside. You can get a piece of 1/8" (maybe smaller) black acrylic cut at TAP or maybe find a piece at Home Depot and then just laminate it to the back of the tank inside the overflow. That should hide the innards of the overflow and not expose your reef to the potential hazard of peeling paint.

krylon is spray. i had to spray the overflow (long story) but i did so out of the tank.

but ya tap plastic would be a good place, they have a store in pleasent hill by the sun valley mall.

make sure you triple check your measurements, they messed up my overflow when i had it made there

I had my overflow made a TAP also. If I were to do it again I would just have them cut the pieces and then I'd finish the edges and glue them myself.

Yeah i made my own over flow with scraps. i think i am going to buy a piece of black to cover the back wall. it will be nice to figure out a way to slide it in and out of the tank for cleaning purposes.
