Pair of True Percs

In Memoriam
I bought a pair of picasso/true percs about three weeks ago. Different sizes. This morning I woke up to find the smaller one stuck to my pump's grill (Vortec). It was still alive but very weak and very beat up. Fins missing/chewed. I moved it to my sump and am hoping I can nurse it back to health enough that I can take it to the LFS where I bought them for them to re-sell. I never saw any real fighting or aggression between the clowns. The larger clown looks very healthy without any evidence of fighting. Is it possible that they were already both females when I purchased them and the territorial/anem finally caused them to fight? I also have a RBTA, mystery wrasse and a potters angel in the 20-gal tank, no signs of aggression from the mystery or angel either.

If they were not an established pair, it's not all that uncommon for a female to violently attack a male. It only takes a few seconds to do some serious damage. Even in established pairs, the female can flip out and kill her mate. That's not all that common though. If you bought them as a "pair", I would no longer trust the LFS on this issue. Many LFS's will simply put two fish together and if they don't kill each other right away, they sell them as a "pair".
