Pairing a maroon clownfish

I have a 2.5" maroon clownfish in quarantine at the moment. I'm looking at pairing it up but I'm not sure if I should be looking for a larger maroon or a smaller one.

If the clown is kept alone, will it become male or female? Or how long with it remain undifferentiated.

Thanks for any help.

I dislike the maroons, but that is just me, they are really mean.

I would look for a smaller maroon. That way if the one you already have has switched then there will be no problems. Eventually if left alone it will become female, from what I have seen with clowns I have, that have been separated.

At that size good chance it may already be female, I'd intro a smaller one, and do it in a breeder box or similar container so you can observe her reaction first, she could refuse it.

Thanks for all of the help. I found a tiny maroon clown and placed him with the larger maroon in the quarantine tank, separated by eggcrate. Unfortunately the little clownfish is tiny enough to fit through the eggcrate so he swam right through, right to the larger clownfish. Now they are just hanging out together. The small one does a little wiggle dance near the large one and the large one sort of hovers motionless while he does it.

I left the eggcrate so he has a place to hide if she gets angry but they've just spent the last couple of hours hanging out, side by side. I guess that's promising.
