Pairing clowns.

Hello, I had an unexpected result pairing clowns today. I have had one existing in my 75g by itself for about 2 months. Its mate jumped out of the tank a couple months ago. :(

Today I added a juvenille clown. I was expecting some agression by the existing clown, but instead the bigger existing clown did the submission seizure. The existing clown is about twice the size of the juvenile.

Is this normal?

I don't have any personal experience with clowns but I was just reading today about breeding them. All clowns start as males, they fight it out and the weaker becomes a female. I also read that once it changes into a female that it increases in size. In a mated pair the female is the larger, I'd suspect if the female survived and you had to have added a male that they will become a pair.

I see. But is it weird that the bigger one is submitting to the smaller one? They didnt even show any aggression.

They are both peculas. The bigger one has been in the tank alone, so I assumed it was female after that length of time. However, when I added the smaller one, there was no agression and the bigger one seemed to submit to the smaller newer one.

Looks like they got things figured out.

Same thing happened to me. I have a 20g and had a Picasso in there for about 5 mo by it self. I picked up a small true perc since im addicted and the LFS was having a sale. There was a little aggression show when I was floating the new one but as soon as I put it in the tank the picasso greeted it with a couple charges and then showed it over to the duncan that it hosts. In a couple of hours they were both rubbing the duncan to death and now I have a happy little clown family.
