Pairing Potter's Angelfish

Hi folks,

I currently have a large Potter's Angelfish in my display (4.5"ish) and my LFS has 2 for sale right now that are in the range of 1.5".

Does anybody know how to sex Potter's so I can try and form a pair? I'm of the understanding that you're suppose to get ones of 2 very different sizes so the small ones at the LFS would seem ideal, is this the case in your opinions?

Thanks!

I would try to go even smaller if you can.

When I paired mine (( lost the male, still have the "female" )), I had an LFS order a tiny one, just placed it in a breeder box in the tank for 24 hours. While they were together they got along great.

The female -- for size, that is a piece of 1" PVC,

The only thing i have noticed with mine is that when he was young his pelvic fins were yellow and as he old older they turned to match his body, so my guess would be if it still has yellow pelvic fins then it should be ok. but it is just a guess!

females tend to have very little blue colouration on their body.

male potters tend to have a larger blue patch on the body.

also, the smaller they are, the higher chances they are females.

At 4.5" and 1.5" its pretty safe to say that is male and female. Males can be aggressive towards females. After you have gotten the smaller one to eat well put it in a clear container in the main tank for a few days before releasing her to the male.

+1. I agree. Those sizes should be good.

Do you have a fallback plan in case things don't work out?

I live 3 mins away from my LFS and we have a good rapport. They'll take her back if it doesn't work out, of course, I'd have to catch her... and no, I don't have a good system for doing that.

Have a wrasse in my tank I've been trying to remove for weeks. :sad2:

Good luck to ya, I used to have a potters pair myself... very beautiful its cool to watch how the females colors differ so much from the males. Different blue to gold ratios between them.

@Keith71 Breath taking pair... have they shown spawning behavior... Every night when the actinics were on mine showed spawning behavior it was awesome.

I had seen a few occassions where they had shown a bit but never full blown.I had some problems with my tank a while back and had to remove all fish to my qt system but still lost some fish.I have one potters left and may try and pair him up again in the future-Kieth
