Pairing up Goldstripe Maroons?

jc,

don't pull him as soon as he shows a little damage to his fins. It may take a little longer and a bit of damage before she relents to allowing him around. It would be bad if they got half way through the process and then had to start over because they were separated too soon. I'd wait until there's pretty significant damage to either the dorsal or tail fin, also you may see some scale damage. If it's just the pecs or vents it isn't too much to worry about and I'd suggest you let it go on a little longer. He'll start looking pretty bad and showing breathing problems when it's time to pull him.

They are a little close in size but if she's been in your tanks for 2 years you can be pretty sure that she's a she. I can't imagine how she can be that old and only be 2". It's strange the size variation in these fish. My clarkii are about 3" and 5" and I saw a spawning pair (as claimed by the LFS) where the female would have been dwarfed by my male.

I had my Maroon for 1 1/2 years (4 inches) and I recently added a 1 1/2 inche Maroon to the tank. I was very worried at first and then I said, I'll never know unless I try it. So I did, and I had no problems what so ever. Things have been working out great between the two. I'm still not sure if the paired up yet. Any thoughts on how you tell when they pair up?

If they see each other and she isn't beating up the little guy then she's on the way to accepting him. I'm sure it helps to have 120g but if she wanted to beat on him she would. As you find them spending time together you'll know they're starting to actual "pair."

The male should do a little dance, too. Kind of turns sideways to the female, and rapidly shakes his whole body side to side.

I agree with dantodd about not pulling the plug too quickly. There's almost certainly going to be some fin damage during this process, and you've got to ride it out if you're going to succesfully pair them. I figured I'd let them go at it until one or the other was obviously debilitated. It never got that far, and they are a happy couple now.

This is not the best picture, but it shows the size difference, as well as the posture the male will take during his dance...

never know

never know

I have a pair that have been togther 6-7 years. They just spawned for the first time today. At least it is the first time I have seen eggs and the male fanning them. The eggs look more silver than post I have seen of other people's that were more orange. Maybe they are not health eggs I have no idea.

That usually just means the eggs are older. They start out very orange and then, as the larva mature they use up the yolk sac and you start to see them instead of the yolk. Eventually you'll see all the eyes reflecting light back at you. When all the eggs look like that you're probably at hatch night.

Congrats. If you're interested in raising any babies go pick up a copy of "Clownfishes" by Joyce Wilkerson. It's a great way to learn the basics and gathering the babies when they hatch isn't too difficult.

I'm not sure how long it takes to raise maroons to marketable size but it is worth a try.

thanks

thanks

thanks you were correct and I could have missed it had you not warned me. Hundreds hatched last night!!

Everything is going well. She seems to be accepting him, like it has been said there is some fin damage but nothing to horrific, just a little tattering. The first time that I placed them together she bit off half of his dorsal fin and a few smaller chinks out of his pecs. They seem to be getting aquainted now. Although I still do not think that he is allowed into "her" anemone yet. He occupies the smaller of the two anemones which is about three to four inches away from the larger one. She is ok if he resides there and swims around near the larger anemone, but if he swims in the anemone she gets a little rough with him. It is kind of funny to watch. She will go to visit him, but he is not allowed into her house.
