I run the 100px-x on 3 different setups as return pumps, and they are virtually silent to me. Maybe the panworld pressure pumps are better suited for closed loops?

there shouldn't be a difference,
the panworld worlds are not silent, they are low noise but not close to silent,
a bet the problem here is the tubing,

Let's put it this way Sam, I can't here them over the skimmers and other things running on my tanks. So, to me they are silent.

I have a couple of questions.
What type of plumbing are you using? PVC, ABS, FlexPVC, Vinyl
What size plumbing? 1", 3/4", 1 1/2 on intake / 1" out.
I would NOT recomend a quiet one pump. To many problems with the new design.

i have plumbed this thing with every combination given my 1.5in bulkhead going into the pump and two 1 in going out.
i have 1.5in coming out of the tank (60gal cube) half way down. this 90's down toward the pump with spa flex to a what i call a disconnect but its a union. then its hard 1 in pvc to the intake of the pump. out of the pump it goes 1in up 2.4-3 feet and tees then goes to the two 1in bulkheads.
i have plumbed so many times with different distances between diameter changes that i doubt it is the plumbing. if i close one of the returns the noise stops. so i actually have to create pressure. panworld acknowledged that this is not right and gave me a new pump. which does the same thing just not as bad. they are now going to send me a 3rd pump because they will not refund anyone.
the only thing i havent tried is SW. i have been testing with freshwater. i doubt this will make much of a difference though

That REALLY REALLY REALLY sounds like theres too many restrictions on the intake of the pump.
Also, why are you using a big pressure rated pump on a closed loop?

actually, if i restrict the flow on the intake the noise will go away. the same goes for the ouput--if i restrict it the noise goes away. so the pump is getting all the water it needs

I've used the iwaki equivilent on a closed loop; I think it's MD40rxt. I spent way more on the iwaki because on that particular pump model the japanese iwaki is supposedly quite a bit quieter, something to do with the hydraulics of that casing and impeller. BTW, when I was on the phone with iwaki, they guy told me that the circulation pumps (non pressure) really do run better with some head pressure, so you might try putting a gate valve on it and just putting enough pressure to quiet it down; hopefully not losing too much flow.
Saltwater might actually make a difference, at least my new pan world 50 pxx return pump (different system) is quieter with salt water; not much, but some.
The only pump sort of in that flow class that I know of that's much quieter is the CSL velocity T4, now owned by blueline (championlighting) I used a smaller one on my skimmer a while back, and it was amazingly close to silent. Man does it run hot, though, so if heat's an issue forget it.

thanks for the info. panworld is shipping me another so i will try that. if that doesnt work then i think i will buy the iwaki. i might just try the american version.
i also thought about the t4 but i dont like the fact that it has a hose barb instead of threads. otherwise i would have gotten it. barbs make me nervous.
i will give panworld and "A" for customer service. everyone i talked to was very nice.
