PAR Range for Monti Cap

I have a purple mont cap that has not changes at all in sixe in two months... It did get a little pail in color but no growth.

It is sitting on a shelf with about 198 PAR. Is that too low?

From my experience, and what I've read, that should be fine. I kept a red M. capricornus about 12 inches below 195 watts of T5 and it grew very rapidly and maintained strong coloration. Many montipora "photosaturate" - a point beyond which extra par makes no difference in photosynthesis - at only 200 par according to research by Dana Riddle.

other factors contribute to a corals growth. For instance if you have a high level of phosphate, that tends to slow sps growth. Also if your calcium, magnesium and alkalinity are not in the proper ranges that could also cause corals not to grow.

purple caps are a pain, they encrust everything and anything. Grow super quick. nip it in the bud now.

Alk 8.5
Calc 400
Phosphates 0 (hanna meter)
Nitrates 0
PH 8.1-8.4
SG 1.025
Temp 78

Other corals have some growth. Birdsnest is doubling in size...
Slow growth on zoas

ZERO on this one...

I know in my tank, the green and red caps grow like a weed at bottom of the tank. I had a purple cap that did absolutely nothing. Tried it higher and lower in the tank and made know difference. Gave up on it. I may be off base, but I think it may have something to do with spectrum of lighting(as long as water parameters are good). I was using 10k at the time and anything purple in color grew terrible. I have since changed to 20k, and I noticed my purple corals grow much better. Too bad I don't have the purple cap anymore.

I Have found that many caps really like high flow, it helps them to attach quickly.. Like a tree putting out its roots to holdfast. Try giving it more flow should help it crust on the rock pretty quick

I got a small hydor pump blowing across it...

The spectrum idea is interesting because none of my purple stuff is really growing....
