parasite on gills

I have a cardinal with some parasites on it's gills. They look like grey little bugs just inside and on the edge of his gills. What are they and what treatment should be performed.
Thanks

Could be flukes. Is he eating? I would start with PraziPro. Is he in a quarantine tank?

Here the pix. It's hard to see but what do you think
thanks,

Maybe Jay can pick something up. I can't see anything. Usually isopds you can see little eyes. I think Flukes would be a better treatment option, and go with the Prazipro, but see what Jay thinks.

Sorry - I was thinking wild caught Apogon cardinalfish, combined with the description of "gray little bugs" by the OP - had me thinking isopod. These are not isopods.

The problem is that you cannot see gill flukes without a microscope. Whatever is on this fish's gills is causing massive trauma. IMO, a fluke infection that bad would have killed the fish long ago. Still, a prazi treatment isn't likely to do any harm.

Here is another thought - Bangaii cardinals are one of the few fish that seem sensitive to goitrogens, compounds that cause goiter. Other fish you see this in include jawfish, sharks and sometimes angelfish. The pinkish growths may actually be out-of-control thyroid tissue. I've seen this grow out of the gills of Bangaiis before - but never out both gills like that. How long has the fish been in captivity?

I've had him for about 5 to 6 years. He was in a 90 gal tank and for the past 2 years I've had him in this 10 gal tank. One problem I've had with this little tank is salinity swings because of evaporation. This may have led to his condition. Any thoughts?

No - salinity changes won't cause gill damage like that. The fact is, this is an OLD fish for that species...making gill flukes much less of a possibility, (if it hasn't recently been exposed to new fish, then gill flukes would be pretty much impossible) and thyroid hyperplasia much more likely. I'm fairly certain that this is goiter, (neoplasm) with possibility that it is cancer....
