Partial Power Outage

my tank is up and running, but it knocked out my house heat. My heater didn't keep up and tank dropped from 79 to 77.


How big of a deal is that? I have a 100w on 36 gallon tank. Should I add my salt mix 50 watt heater?

I am thinking about upgrading that 100 to 150. I think it is under gunned

scary and unrelated or related my shrimp molted last night hope that every one is okay. Most of my coral is hardy (zoa, Hammer, green star polyp)

Any advice is appreciated - I am out of town so have to direct my tank helper on next steps.


If you want to talk partial house power outage - it is a real head scratcher- breaker didn't trip, but a whole circuit went out. None of the GFIs were tripped so I got a bad connection somewhere I guess.

77 is not a big deal as long as you think that is as low as it will go. If you have reason to suspect a longer term outage then I'd add the second heater just to stabilize and prevent further cooling.

I don't think the 2 degree drop will have any long lasting affects on the system.

FWIW I have been playing around with my tank temps and have had my tank running between 76-77 degrees for a few months.

I had a similar issue last month with a partial outage like you have described and it turned out to be the main feed coming into the house. The electric company ended up trenching a new feed cable from the street to the house. All tanks and corals were fine with a temp drop of a few degrees.

If only half of your house is working and none of your 220V equipment is working, you lost one hot feed to your house. Call the power company.

yeah I am getting alot that it might be the feed to the house. It is weird it seems well less than half my house. So frustrating I think I am going to bounce between electric company and electrician- hopefully they know what they are doing


In regards to the temp drop being a newbie 2 degrees doesn't seem like a lot, but it was my first shrimp molt. Plus I am not home so if freak the wife out lol

I am reading the book Aquarium Corals and the words I do understand he said some corals are sensitive to as little as a 2-3 degree delta. I know that my easy corals don't fit that build, but still gave pause.

5 minutes before electrician gets there power comes back on after 2 days

He couldn't find anything in the house so will have the power company check the supply line.

the extra 50 watts let me keep the temperature. Any my tiny pistol shrimp has claimed that molted shell for him and the goby lol
