I am currently running 2 x 250 metal halide hq over a 50 gallon breeder tang. I use 20K bulbs I purchased from Proaquarium and couldn't be happier. Coral color is definitely better than other bulbs I've used but there are signs of growth I am beginning to see on my sps.
With summer coming soon I have an old 96 watt PC fixture and I was going to purchase an actinic 03 bulb for accent lighting. They will be on 3 hours before and 3 hours after metal halides have been run for 6 hours. This would give the tank a total of 12 hrs light but cutting the wattage dramaticlly in retrospect to 12 continuous hours of MH. This would aid in keeping water temperature at acceptable levels.
Someone else said to use T5's instead of the PC. No real reasoning except they are superior. My question would be is it worth the expense of purchasing a dual light T5 unit as ooposed to paying a fraction of the cost for a 96 watt actinic PC? I would revert back to No supplemental lighting to straight metal halide when cooler weather prevails.
