PC vs. T-5's

Alot of information was posted through the weekend! I wanted to say thank you for sharing what you have experienced with us Grim. Personally, I think like most things in the saltwater hobby, your mileage may very. Some people might be able to run a halide better than T5s and vice versa. Either way the differences, in my opinion, are moot. Both Metal Halides and T5s power any coral with exceptional growth.

Grim,

I got a light meter today to test my system. Here's what I have and the results.

75 gallon, lights 5 inches above the water. With just the 4 bulbs in the center (on an Icecap ballast, with 3 Blue+ and 1 GE Daylight 54 watt bulbs all using Tek reflectors. All 4 bulbs are less than 2 weeks old.

8 inches below water surface - 216
At sand level 17.5 inches below surface - 135

Adding in 1 bulb on each side of the canopy (AquaBlue on a Workhorse ballast with Tek refectors). Bulbs are 1 year old.

8 inches below water surface - 252
At sand level 17.5 inches below surface - 171

Thanks,

Dave

A few pics for those who are thinking about T5 light. BTW: I am getting 171 Lumens on the sandbed... and yes those are Croceas under Flourescent lighting.

Do you enclose the sensor for underwater use or is the sensor water proof?
The website does not give specfics on this aspect of the sensor.
I might be interested in buying one.

Thanks,
Ray

we have club equipment?

Yes we do! I think that the glass clamps see the light of day more than any other equipment though.

Holy - this is one piece of equipment that will be in HIGH demand. I'd surely love to borrow it to test the light output in my T5 setup on my 55G tank. Shame Ardmore is so far away!!!

Way freaking cool...

Ok. I finally read this entire post. SOLD!!! I want T-5's all the way now. Now, any recomendation on where to obtain these fancy lights? I found a few kits on Ebay. I know I want ATI bulbs. Anyone know of a reasonable outlet?

Well.....before it gets loaned out I think there will have to be some form of a deposit and time period of loan.

At almost $300 its a lot to have to potentially replace.

I think one of the conditions of use is that the user reports the findings back and documents THEIR setup so that the rest of us can benefit from what they learn.

Paul.

Sounds like a good plan...
