PE Mysis....Who uses it?

Getting ready to place a frozen food order. I used PE few years ago, but it was horrible on my Aqua C EV skimmer, it would shut down for hours. Now I have a more powerful skimmer and was considering using it again. I guess I thought maybe it was a little "overrated" with fish like Triggers and Wrasses and so on, not like these fish are picky.

Just curious what people with "aggressive fish" think of it? If it's worth it vs. Jumbo Mysis.

i use it, but to be fair ive never used any other brand of mysis, so i dont know if it is better than any other mysis. I also feed a variety of frozen foods at the same time, and my skimmer doesnt skim for a while after i feed.

I have the sheets of PE Mysis but use it sparingly now becuase as you said, it does wipe out the skimmer a while. I have a super reef octopus skimmer and it does recover much faster than my previous skimmer(reef devil delux). Seems like the down draft skimmers take much longer to recover from these types of food. For frozen, I prefer to feed clams, krill, angel & formula 1 & 2 from Ocean nutrition. Been saving the PE for the QT as there is no skimmer there to worry about.

Foster and Smith is currently out of the Jumbo Hikari Mysis that has become my staple, that's what had me considering the PE.

That's a good idea though Peter, it might be good to use in the qt tank for new arrivals. I may order one flat of it.

i prefer the PE mysis over all the other frozens. it just seems much more meaty than the small regular mysis or anything else.

I like the larger PE mysis more than any other mysis I've used.

Small fish wont like it because it's too big, but anything over 4" will really go for it with gusto.

As far as protein skimmer shutting down... maybe it's just the type of food I feed but I always noticed with any meaty food that the protein skimmer goes into low production mode after feeding protein rich foods... something to do with the oils messing up surface tension or something like that.

Anyway, I wouldnt skip buying a product based off it making your protein skimmer not skim perfectly, it isnt as if your tank is going to crash because your skimmer isnt skimming at 100% for 3 hours :) If it is, then you need to improve your filtration.

I only use PE Mysis. It's the best mysis on the market today. I've tried several other brands and none have produced the quality that PE does. Most of the public aquariums/zoos I deal with will tell you the same thing.

This is correct. Many 'good' foods will have an impact on the ability to fractionate for a period after feeding. It's ok and very normal. Your skimmer doesn't have to be foaming up in the chimney 24/7 for it to be 'working'.

I use it but it's a big pain to rinse before cuz they do come rather "dirty" and lately the packs I've been getting have a lot of shredded mysis similar to hikari regular mysis sometimes. That said just made the switch over to hikari jumbo mysis and that's some solid and big shrimp you're getting there.

We rinse any of the frozen mysis, brine, etc we feed out. PE is definitely a bit "dirtier", but all of these products can trash your water quality if you don't rinse them.

We kept and raised SH for many years, and rinsing the thawed mysis was really the only way to keep excess nutirents out of the tank. It only takes a coiuple of seconds, but it's well worth it.

hey kirk,

saw in the other thread, your emp and passer looks fantastic with no signs of HLLE. do you soak your food in anything? dose the tank with anything?

Up close, my Emp is not perfect, you can see just the slightest trace of HLLE. I think I agree with CCampbell, Emperors flourish best when they are the tank Alpha, he looks pretty good though. The Passer is now fat and flawless, truly a perfect specimen. I do use Zoe, and Selcon, and occasionally vitamin C, I don't dose anything.

Well, F and S are out of Hikari Jumbo Mysis for a month!!!! Weird. I can't find it anywhere. So I may do the PE from Marine Depot, they have the 40 oz flats for a decent price.
