Hi

I have a 300 litter reef aquarium my first. :}
It is only setup about 3 months and I recently bought a pectina coral.
Coral placement is on the bottom and front centre.

It was fine for the first week but it is starting to loose colour and the tips and going white and retracting.

KH is 9 and stable
Ph is 8.2
Cal is 440
Mag is 1460
Nitrates 0
Nitrates 2

I did recently have an issue with heater been faulty.
Temp dropped to 24.3.
Now stable at 26.5

I am using 2 ghl mitras with max output at 70% now set to 65%

Blues at 100%
Whites at 25 %

Any help And advice you can give me would be great.

Not certain what is going on, but many SPS keepers will tell you that it usually takes a while for tank chemistry to really come together. Your tank has only been set up for 3 months and you might be just dealing with some issues because the tank isn't fully mature yet. It often takes a good year or so to really get things running smoothly.

The temp change could have bothered it so just be patient and maybe things will correct themselves.

Otherwise, I would agree with what you did by turning the lights down just a bit. I've also had an issue with corals turning white due to high LED intensity.

Thanks and yes I agree I should not have purchased these sps until I had more knowledge and tank more mature. I just hope he comes back as he is a beauty and killing him will not sit well..

Patience is key and ill learn the hard way.

He is looking worse today unfortunately.

Two things about Pectinia; they do not need or like direct light nor direct flow. 2 Mitras on a 80G tank running at 65% is quite strong, depending on distance to water line, and can burn sensitive LPS like Pectinia. Try moving it from front and centre to one of the corners, which ever one has the least amount of water flow, and give it a week to recover. Beautiful coral :beer:

I agree with m007, it will take a while to get it aclimate to higher led intensity. This coral is an LPS coral as well so doesn't really like the water condtions sps do. Try feeding it some pe mysis when the lights go off, it should have its feeding sweepers out then. If your nutrients are low it could be what's causing the tips to look bad but the pics are hard to really see well on my phone. If it has brown nasty stuff at the affected areas and smells bad out of the water it has brown jelly and will need to be cut with a Dremel or bandsaw.

A lot of people mix it up since it branches somewhat similar to sps. Anyways the LPS forum would take longer to get an answer sometimes.

Hi my pectinia looked to be recovering after I moved him and clipped back the damaged part.

Unfortunately he appears to be peeling again.

I have sent away for a Triton water analysis and hope to get the results soon..
Any other suggestions you could give me would be great.
