Animal Specialties

Animal Specialties

Today, while traveling to Danville, I detoured to this store:

Animal Specialties.
Basin Street Shopping Center
201 Basin St # 11,
Williamsport, PA 17701
(570) 322-9755 • Fax: (570) 322-9755

The woman who waited on me was very nice and helpful.
The price that I was charged for a large piece of Xenia was fair - $25.
The store was relatively clean and not difficult to find.
These, are the positives.

However, there was only one tank with coral. It only had xenia (it might actually be clauveria as I did not see it pulse, star polyps, kenya trees, and, some other common corals. Although I am not attempting to malign this store, I do wax longingly for the good old days of:

Ron Hunsicker and Saltwater Heaven
Judy and the salt box

Where have you two gone? The worker at the above store stated that Ron still buys a bucket of salt, now and then. I miss your big tank Ron, it was the best I ever saw.

Thought i would back up a few and add a couple.
Pet Zone in Pittston--Top notch. Great to deal with, decent selection. These guys are very knowledgable.
Chuck's Aquarium House-Nice guy, nice store, very healthy animals. Chuck is great to deal with with a great personality and has fair prices.
Pecto_Wilkes-barre- Surprising not too bad. Usually have a pretty big selection.
Petco_Dickson City-Not as nice. Usually has a red slime algea problem in their tanks. Alot of their stuff dies right after you get it home.
DC Pets Dickson City- Kind of rude. they think they know it all. Hate Nano tanks. Their saltwater tanks are in horrible shape. Very dirty looking and very few items for sale in them. A few people that i know that did buy stuff got ick and ruined their tanks. ALL of their stuff is wild caught.
Fins and Feathers-Honesdale- Small selection but their stuff looks really healthy.

Still interested in that 55 gallon tank, drilled, for my home-made surge device. As soon as I get some cash flow, I will be in.

I just went to this place this week:
Coral Cove
8 London Ct
Newton PA 18940
www.coralcovereefexotics.com

The website has some of his stuff but email him for his photobucket account, it has more items. Also, he tries to have people order directly from him as opposed to using his site so he doens't get charged for CC use. If you go through him he will give discounts. My buddy and I left spending less than we expected to and getting mroe than we expected to. He doesn't stock fish or inverts but will order them if you request it.

You summed up this store pretty good, except for the amazing amount of aptasia in that 150 gallon show tank they have. It is an allright store but they dont seem to know nearly as much as they think they do, they were selling a badly bleached sebae anemone awhile back, when I pointed it out to the older lady who works there she said she doesnt know much about the saltwater part of the store, but she had told me on an earlier visit she takes care of all the saltwater tanks. Somebody bought that bleached out sebae, hopefully they nursed it back to health.

There is a new place in Mount Bethel, PA Reef and Ponds, looks very promising being going in there the last couple of weeks and talking to the owner operator (Joe) looks like is good competition, prices are low on livestock and there is a good amount of dry goods

just to make things clear I am in no way shape or form affiliated to Reef and Ponds

I am going to take a trip to Reef n Pond this month. I heard about them at the last swap and was told if you mention 'the reefers lounge' the owner will give you either a 5 or 10% discount. I plan on going on a day he gets coral in, do you happen to know what day his shipments arrive?

What's the majority of coral livestock he has in-store? I'm interested in viewing the store. My concern is for typical shrooms, xenia & dull sps it's not worth the 1.5 hour drive.

I'll be making a stop there tomorrow as I drive by very close when I come from work... I know he was working on getting a couple of frag tanks for SPS frags, usually lots of zoas LPS acans etc... its worth a visit if you are in the area.

This is a fairly new store in Duncansville, PA called Coral Reef Keepers. They carry only saltwater. They have several coral flats and carry fish and inverts as well.

Information is from their website. I'm told they will have a new website soon.

2 places to list:
Knockout Aquatics. It's on 715 just a little past the outlets. It's a tiny place but packed with tanks. The prices on the fish are decent and his coral look great. He has lots of SPS.

Fin-Sanity: 335 Union St in Luzerne. The place just opened so he's not fully stocked but I did ask him to get me a couple of fish. I was quoted at $85 and $65 for a blue throat trigger other places and he found me a gorgeous 4-5" for $30. Another plus is he had plenty of zoas which are my favorite.
