people with nano 24's

can you tell me if its a good idea to bin all filter media that comes with the nano and just use....
chamber 1: filter floss
chamber2: carbon, purigen, rowa phos and filter floss.
chamber 3: pump.
this would involve throwing away:
chamber 1: black sponge
chamber 2: black sponge, bio balls and ceramic rings.
my tank has been running for 2 months now with all of the above in it. i've heard all the nano media houses nitrates. would it hurt to bin all the nano filter media on the same day? (i have no fish just a clean up crew and 2 corals in my tank).

I used an egglite from petco and put some live rock rubble and chaeto in the second chamber with the egglite and some carbon in the first and it worked well for me.

I recently setup my NanoCube 24DX and followed the general consensus on here. That is to discard the three sponges, bio balls and ceramic media. In chamber 1 put in a nice handful of nylon floss (pillow stuffing) and replace it weekly. it's easier to throw the floss away then to thoroughly clean the sponges.

Chamber 2 you can put in some macro algae or LR rubble or both. Be sure to keep this area well lit if you plan to keep macro algae. I personally keep a mesh bag with carbon in here as I don't have the lighting setup for macro.

Chamber 3 is your return pump and heater.

Seems like you have it down already

is it ok to bin your spones and rings one day, then bio balls the next, or shuuld i take it slowly? my tank has been running for 3 months.

similarly, I put floss in chamber 1, LR rubble in chamber 2 with chaeto at the surface, but I actually put my carbon bag in chamber 3 with the heater and filter. tank has been established about 18 months this way.

From all my research on this forum and trying things out I found my most successful and this forums most popular combo to be

Chamber1: Floss (thrown away weekly)----Purigen---Chemi-pure

Chamber2: LR rubble (as much as you can fit, and try to get pieces that are light and full of wholes)

Chamber3: Pump and heater

And 10 to 20% water changes weekly

Cheers,

Josh

PS: MODS, this would be a good survey/poll

Doglover,

Do you have extra light or the stock hood over that chaeto? Does it grow well? I like this idea but didn't think it got enough light back there.

Thanks,

Josh

Josh, I do a switch out routine. I happen to like the deep green of chaeto and think it's nice looking; so I keep a small wad of it in the display wedged against the rock and glass. I keep a second wad of it in the 2nd compartment; once per week when I'm changing out the floss, I change them up--display to compartment and vice versa. So far, no chaeto rot, and further, my chaeto is growing and I am having to cut it back about once per month, so I think it's doing the job. Since I'm cheap and lazy, I'll probably no invest in a light for the compartment.
