Peppermint Angels

Just a quick survey: how many people in the states are realistically interested in possibly getting a peppermint angel? I know that most of our rare fish ends up in Asia but I would like to see a few peppermints make there way to US hobbyists. No, we do not have any yet - this would just be for my own curiosity.

Knowing they are very rare and a highly anticipated collectors item, if they were available I am sure many people would go for it.

On another note, where do they come from? Deepwater locations in Moorea?

Yes, Rich Pyle recently found them in moorea. As far as I know they haven't been collected commercially in at least the past ten years. We are considering putting together an expedition to tahiti within the immediate future.

considering you are in hawaii, then putting up a expedition, collecting and bringing it back;i would say you better forget to send it to states, unless you catch 20+....
you will get dozen buyers in asia willing to pay $10000 for that fish, where in states a fish like interruptus angel, with under $3000 tags stays unsold for months....

Such pretty fish with a steep price tag because they are so rare. Pretty sure there are those that would pay to have them though. Waynel33 has such a nice, although pricier set of fish (I love them!), but if aquariums were my main hobby I might also have them too. :) Imagine one day if they were breeding them and they were more easily accessible...

If I were you, I would contact Frank at RCT and let him in on your plans. Perhaps you could sell him a pair or loan him a pair if he agrees to give back a % of what is raised.

Getting a reproductive population in captivity I think is the most important thing to do right now.

 Couldn't agree more.

like Frank,Rufus too lives in hawaii....so i think he is well aware of that....:D

I think b/c they can sell for 20K or so each in Asia, it will go straight over there. Not much chance of a collector loaning out a fish or selling at discount when they can get that much up front.

they were offered a few years ago in Europe, pre order with attractive price, but nothing happened.

The information I got was that they were offered in Europe the last time a collection was announced. They were also offered in the US and definitely in Asia. The trip went through, and the price was increasing with every dive. They were not fining any. Buyers pulled out at the end when price became very high with more dives. Dives were then cancelled and no fish were caught.

This is unconfirmed news, and I hope someone with some insight can chime in.

If a pair were to be taken into captivity for the purposes of captive breeding that would be extraordinary.
