peppermint shrimp

the keep dieing, i put one in about 3 weeks ago, have not seem him or anything even late at night, i just put another one in and within an hour i was dead and on my coral banded shrimps mouth. All my parameters are good,

0 ammonia,nitrate,nitrites.
8.4 PH
80 temp


Any suggestions as to what it could be about my tank, i mainly bought it to see if he would eat some very small aptasias.

How are you acclimating them, if it died within an hour after introduction, you could be acclimating them too fast and putting them into shock. Are you drip acclimating them?

I'm not sure if copper affects peppermints more than coral banded shrimps, but there might be copper in your water that could be affecting your peppermints more than your coral banded shrimp.

Or there could be something wrong with the shrimp your getting. They could be too young and couldnt' handle being brought to a new tank. They could have been in bad tank conditions ect.

Other than that, I don't know. I'm sure others will jump in and give suggestions.

it was not drip acclimated, the LFS said it should be fine just floating it for an hour. I guess if i try again with one of the ill do a drip acclimation. There s got to be something else though, so you say they are sensitive to copper?

They may also be sensitive to coral banded shrimp claws While I agree that shrimp should always be drip acclimated, I don't know that that is necessarily your problem. Coral banded shrimp have a reputation for being very aggressive, especially if it's already had time to establish territory in a 29 gallon cube...

Floating for an hour only brings the temp up and that only takes a couple minutes. Dripping also brings the ph difference together which is a killer of livestock.

yeah, your acclimation could be part of the reason. I don't think your coral banded shrimp could do damage with one claw since mine did no damage when it lost its arm, it couldn't hurt anything.

coral banded shrimp do have a tendincy to be aggresive and kill pepermint shrimp. with 1 claw or not, it couls kill the peppermint if it wanted to.

i also agree with not just floating your shrimp. that does nothing but temp. but i also dont agree with drip acclimation either. i slowly add water to my bag while it is floating. drip acclimation does not keep the tempature the same as the tank, unless it is hot in the house. add about a 1/2 cup full of water every 10-15min for an hour while floating your bag. then discard as much water as you possibly can from the bag before you put it in your tank.

Your method isn't considered drip acclimation? thats what i always did and i always considered it to be drip acclimation.

thanks for the suggestions, ill try one more time and hopefully the third time is the charm. Good thing they are only 5 bux around here, i would hate it if it was cleaner, those are 30.

drip acclimation is slowly intruducing water by dripping it into a container wich is below the tank, usualy the hose is gravity fed so it needs to be lower then the tank. i have had alot of people show me how they drip acclimate and thats how they do it. also a couple of sites you order from tell you to do the same thing.

i do not like drip acclimation as it does not keep the temp the same as the tank. the water dripping cools down and the specimen gets used to room tempature. were as floating and adding water while it is floating keeps the tempature the same as the tank.

no problem, i always like helping out others in the hobby.

i do know of some people who have made a special tank or container just for acclimation though. they add a heater and some even add a small pump.

i am going to try one more time, this time ny adding a bit of water to the bag every 20 minutes for a few hours. Thanks for the suggestions Guygettnby.

also my coral banded just molted and grew his claw back, a bit smaller than the other ut i is there.

I float the bag in the sump and drip acclimate right into the bag. This keeps temperature stable. I don't QT shrimp, so when the drip is done, it's right into the Display.

I dont have a sump or quarantine tank so i have to float it in the main tank.
