PEPPIE's ODD-BALL BUILD

Your woodworking skills apear even better than your acrylic skills! Nice work, very unique design, and I'm looking forward to more! Do you have any other systems running?

I have a 40br set up. It is a back up tank. The 90gal AIO I had built had a seam starting to go bad so I tor It down and put every thing in the 40 until I get this one done. I am about 3-4 weeks out.
Thanks for the kind words.
The lights will have a twist.

A little work on the feeding door. The inside thin strips will keep the panel from falling in the hood

The out side. The bottom black trim is held higher than the opening to hold the bottom in place and a magnet will hold the top in place

I added another piece of trim to the top of the crown, I might add a piece of black to the top of that

I choose Peruvian Walnut for the black wood thru out the build. It works easy and is a consistent color. I ripped some 1/4'' strips to make a bead strip. This is the tool of choice

I will apply this bead around the DT viewing area

I wet the wood down with some water too see the effect of the black next to the mahogany

Thanks greech.
Some times these "skills" are great, other times friends and relatives expect quality work for near free or free. LOL

The light twist is here. I have borrowed this system from other posts here at RC. I will be upgrading to LEDs in the future. So I dont want to hve to build a new hood or make any mods to this half hood.
I have CF lights now 2 @ 130watt. I will hang them independent from the hood. I bought some heavy duty shelf brackets. I found some drawer slides in the attic. (Ihave a hard time throwing stuff away, just for this reason) lol

They will hang off the back wall

110_2757.jpg

I want to keep it light so I cut a hanging bracket out of 1/2'' plywood

110_2763.jpg

I want to keep as much light in and reflected as possible (the underside is white)
110_2765.jpg

I added another stationary frame to the top of the bracket to hold another reflective panel

Wonderful job so far. I wish I could build such beautiful things. The final project will be amazing.

Thanks Genin,
Anybody following this build have an opinion on how much flow to run thru the fuge area? I have left the flow rate adjustable, just by switching out the return pump at the bulkhead.
The total water volume is 85gal.
Slow or fast? I will rely on powerheads for DT water circulation so the return flow is not part of that equation.
The max 900 is about 160-180gph (I think) and the 1200 is close to 240gph again (i think)
More? or Less?

What do you want the fuge to do? If you want the best chaeto growth, a pretty fast flow, setup so that the chaeto ball rolls is best.

There will be a ball of chaeto in the the fuge along with some live rock rubble. I want to grow pods and I want it to aid in the PH swing when the DT lights go out.
Should I add a powerhead and maybe a couple of curved baffles to keep the ball rolling?
Thanks for the reply Kgross, I value your opinion. You have been helpful on this build.

I will say adding a baffle or powerhead to help roll the ball is a great idea. You will get pod growth no matter what. If you roll the ball, you will get growth from all sides of the ball rather than just the top, giving faster growth, more CO2 usage and more nutrient export.

Thanks man, I had thought about the curved baffles earlier. I was also thinking of putting the powerhead on a timer. Maybe 6 times in a 24hr period, for 5min at a time. I guess I would have to do some tests to see how much it would roll. Are you a 24 hrs day lights on in the fuge or do you like the opposite lite cycle to the DT?

Thanks again Kim, That is the light cycle I am running on my current tank.
Pics of the revised fuge to come in the future.
