Percula Eggs!!

Cleaning my class tonight I noticed my Percula Clowns have laid eggs! :bounce2:

I was just happy to have a bonded pair, but now I'm getting excited about the possibility of raising fry. Looks like this will be a research weekend...

This is just too cool. Sorry our phones kept cutting out so much last night btw.

It may take me awhile to find it but there is a wonderful forum devoted to breeding/raising clowns and other sw fish.

ACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quick if you have that second tank up and running with nobody in it move the eggs that you can there.

My mating pair ate the kids within 24 hours of spawning. You have about 7 days to figure out how to raise the fry if your lucky.

I don't have anything setup and ready to go :(

Based upon the one FAQ I have read so far, I might just need to let these guys go and hope that I have the right setup running by the time the next ones hatch (assuming this wasn't a one time deal).

Raising fry is pretty difficult. It is really awesome to do but takes quite some time to get it right.

good luck!

Thanks. This first batch I noticed must have hatched last night, no evidence of any survivors but that doesn't surprise me. I'm still researching and will be watching closely to see if this was a one time deal or something they will keep repeating.

I been looking a little into the propagation of phytoplankton and rotifers. I'm thinking even if I don't try to raise fry the phytoplankton and rotifiers might be beneficial to my tanks anyhow.

The pair I had laid eggs only 2 times while I had them. The person who had them before me said they laid eggs several times for him then just stopped.

When I got them the laid on the first two cycles then never did again for a year.

At three days I doubt they hatched. They probably were eaten.

I just noticed them 3 days ago, looking at photo's online of the progression I'm all but certain these guys went the full term. Matter of fact, I think this might not of been the first time. They been hanging out in a corner of the tank for a couple of months. They been hanging out together ever since I got them but they were getting closer. Just chance I worked aroudn the side of the tank to see the eggs.

New batch of eggs, they were much larger and darker in color when I noticed them last time. This batch is a orange or red in color.

I'm still not setup to do anything with them but I think I will try hanging a tile in that area for the next batch to see if I can get them to host on something removable.

Sounds like a much more via batch of eggs this time.

Yeah make sure what you put in there resembles what they are laying on now color wise and that you have at least 3~4 of them to rotate out when you are ready to try with the fry.

I already thought about having multiple objects to rotate in and out but it didn't dawn on me to try and replicate the color. I can see the logic though. I was planning to buy a cheap piece of tile, but they are laying eggs on my overflow, between it and the back glass. Both of which are black. Any suggestions on something black to hang over the back?

BTW, just to be more clear on my description of the eggs.
These I noticed on day one, very tiny and orange/red in color. When I first noticed the others I think they were arleady day 4 since the eggs were larger and darker in color. Actually I was even getting the small reflection spots which is supposed to be the eyes.

So, if I start trying to grow my own phytoplankton and rotifers, how benifitial are they to feed to my tanks coral? If they are of a nice benifit to my current livestock, then it would be less time and money wasted if the raising fry doesn't work out.

I have raised tomato clowns before. I worked on it for about a year. Toward the end of the year I was starting to have decent success about that time we moved to our new house and my daughter overfed my breeders which ended up killing them.
Anyway, if I were you I would not switch out what they are laying eggs on, as it always disrupted my breeders but this was just my experience. I would try to stick to using the same tile or whatever you decide to use. I have some greenwater you can have if you want a start as you will definately need it to get anywhere with what your doing. I have a few rotifer cysts also. If I can get them going you can also have a start of them as what your trying to accomplish is a great endeavor and I would like to help you if possible.

You know come to think of it I have some discs for the green water and stuff for rotifers as well floating around the house in my supplies that I was going to use with mine when they were breeding. If you want them PM me.

I appreciate the offer guys. I may be in contact about purchasing some green water or rotifiers.

Phil, the thing with the Clowns is they are laying eggs on my overflow currently. So I need to get something in there that I can remove.

I do not want any money for them. I would like to see someone raise some clownfish locally. I would think a piece of tile would probably work or a piece of curved plastic if it will sink.

Well I was going to let you have all the supplies I've got but was gonna make it in exchange for a pair of those rare WV naked perculas (or what ever they get named) when you get all the little fellers growing out good and I have a tank going.

In our area, I tend to think that finding homes for them might be as difficult as raising them. LOL

Nah just just advertise Rare LE WV Perculas and they'll fly out the door at a premium price.

Speaking of that I have a couple of rare tiger striped WV Felis catus that I'm looking for a home for if anybody is interested.
