They're intertidal snails. They crawl above the water line and wait for the tide to come in. In an aquarium that means they often crawl out of the tank, and spend most of their time sitting above the water waiting for a tide that doesn't come in. Most also aren't truly tropical either. They're poorly suited to captivity.
When i was a newbie tried a bag, most maybe lasted 2 - 5 weeks in tropical tanks and dumb alot of ammonia in my tank (they died and decompose). Not recommended since most of them die.
On the other food stuff note, the manilla clams, I do have around 50% survival rate after a year. Not sure if it reduce nitrate or any other pros/cons though.
