Peroxide dip?

Hey, I was hoping for some advice here. I have several zoos in my tank, and I have 1....just 1 frag plug that seems to grow green hair algae and its overtaking my zoos. I have no other algae problems in the tank, in fact, that particular frag plug is the only place you see algae in my tank! Anyway, I've read that you can do a peroxide dip for algae, but not sure on the actual details, such as concentration and time, and frequency if applicable. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I'm tired of tearing this stuff off by hand, and agravating the zoos. THANKS!

Hi Rovster,

I have some experience with zoas and peroxide dips so I can give you my two cents. First, you can kill the zoas if the dip is too strong and if you leave the frag in the dip too long. Second, if you do the dip correctly the results are amazing. I have cured many zoas that had some kind of white spec dusty types fungus or bacteria that furan-2 and iodine dips would not cure. So I'm all for peroxide dips.

I haven't tried the dip for algae but I can give you safe instructions for the dip so you don't harm your zoas. My dip is 1 cup of tank salt water mixed with 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide. I only dip the frag for about 10 seconds and then I put it back into my tank. This dip has done great things for me and my zoas.

If you have any questions just ask.

My experience:

1. Buy a brand new bottle of 3%.
2. Remove frag from tank and dry.
3. Pour, use a q tip or tooth brush and apply to algae.
4. It will bubble and I have done this for several minutes.
5. Rinse off with a turkey baster of tank water.
6. Put back in tank.
7. Repeat as necessary.

It is interesting that I can leave my zoas alone for several minutes and I never have issue but Lee has killed his at a weaker concentration and a shorter duration.

I have also used the 1 to 4 mix without any ill effects. After maybe a 1 min. dip I dipped in just tank water before returning to tank.

I just dripped H2O2 on the area with hair algae, and scrape it off a little with your fingernail. Rinse it and put it back in the tank.

I'd say 30-60 sec should do it =] using regular store bought H2O2

I dip all my corals in peroxide... works great! I use a 4:1 ratio of distilled water to peroxide and leave the corals in for about 30-45 seconds... maybe up to a minute, but no longer than that. After I dip them, I let them rest in a bowl of tank water (they will continue to bubble and slime) for a few minutes, then put them in the tank.

I've never had anything die on me from the peroxide dip.

I usually take a larger baggie and put one cup used tank water and 1/4 cup peroxide 3%. place the coral in and shake it a bit. soak for one minuite. I put it in the tank in front of the vortech to clean it off and put.it back. I usually dim the leds down for the rest of the day. this is with sps corals so you should be able to.soak longer and not have to worry about the lighting with zoas.

I do a 50/50 mix for 3 to 5 min never had an issue or loss just dead hair algae.
So I don't think the mix has to be so precise IMO.

so you guys have had success with SPS! nice. what about LPS?

I too have a few frags that algae keeps growing back on in a small frag tank and I am getting tired of moving the frags to my DT for my tangs to much it up!

I've never seen an Lps frag that had to have the actual polyp dipped. They can all be spot treated around the base like Kafuda wrote so that only the target is treated.

What types of algae have you all been successful with? Today I am going to dip a large frag to rid it of some unknown algae. It only affects that frag and is a green slimey type. I have tried putting the frag in the sump for a week with no light only to have it come back and tried rubbing it off the zoas. No luck.

I also want to try this on a large rock with 5 types of sps, various zoas, and the only place in my tank with bubble algae. Has anyone had success against that algae?

yep on the bubble.
pull the rock, break the bubbles then dip as above for 3-5 min.
it'll kill it....

trick with all of these is to use new, unopened peroxide.
as it sits, it gets weaker and weaker....

How long does it take for the algae to die off? Is it immediately, or will it slowly die off? I just tried this, but with an old bottle of peroxide (I saw that it is better with a new bottle after I dipped them) but the algae didn't really melt away. Just wondering if it takes time, or if I need a new bottle of peroxide. Thanks.

When doing peroxide dip, you have to watch if zoa are bubbling just beneath its "skin". It happens if zoa is damaged and peroxide dip can kill it. This is what happened to my shazzam rainbow, it has been closed for nearly 3weeks :(
At least this is my experience.
