Perry's AIO 50 cube

Nice work Perry! I'm a little sad to see the larger system go but it will be fun to follow the new tank!

My name is Matthew Graham and I approve of this message. :)

LOL,
I am glad you approve Mr. Graham :) You really cannot go wrong with a single 250watt radium over this footprint, should light this tank to perfection!

Awesome. Can't wait to see the tank with the halide on top.

Hopefully next week man, I am stoked and this should work perfectly :)

Great stuff!

Will having the the MH change the nature of the reef? Will it still be a mixed reef or will it now be sps dominate?

Best fortune with all that you do.

Kevin

Thank You Kevin! I have grown way too fond over ricordeas, my scoly, acans, etc... So I will keep them all in one tank and try to balance health for all corals, this will be tricky, but I think for me the halide will be easier. I am certain I could get it done with LED, but I KNOW 100% that I can achieve coloration with halides. I just do not have the confidence with LED, already burned a few acro frags and bleached a couple more. With t5 and halide, this would not have happened. The human eye cannot capture certain sensitivity in LED that you can with more linear lighting, this causes amateurs like me to over light with LED, thus scorching them. Anyway, I will still use the a160we for max blue at 50% with angle for actinic up and down viewing, I think it will pair nicely with 7 hours halide daily. Thanks again for checking in!

Hey Tim, thanks for the kind words man! Yeah, I have basically divided my reef by half, and starting over with frags, lol... This setup is basically easy, and automated, so I will hopefully get some growth going and fill this bad boy up! This tank will be loaded with corals, and will be placed with max health in mind, using shading for light sensitive corals, and filling the open space with large colonies.... Ahhh.... the vision is coming :)

Update:
Started using AF Life Source, and did not have any adverse reactions to the tank. The mud is dispersed by placing and kneading with my fingers by the return pump. The tank is cloudy for maybe a half hour, and no real visible deposits, unless a larger piece escaped. This is a mud, it does not smell foul, it smells of minerals, like soil, very earthy. I understand this to be an extraction off the reefs of Fiji. The idea behind it is to help balance the micr-biology of the tank. With my tank being rather new, I see no harm in this :) Skimmer did not over-produce during dosing. Within an hour, the tank was crystal clear. I might mention that the tank has well seeded sand from my previous 120 gallon tank, and a few pieces of rock from that tank. I also have a piece of fiji live rock(air rock). I have tons of micro life, but absolutely understand the importance of balance with SPS. Cheers!!!

Hey Perry, glad you are trying out this product. I'm curious about it. I was considering using it like Mark did (he is using W. S. Fiji mud) in a container, in a more static way. Instead of broadcasting it in the tank, using it as a sand bed in the sump.. maybe put it in flat containers that can be removed and replaced on a regular basis.. Because it is so fine, I don't think I'd make the bed thicker than 1 1/2 inch to 2 inches deep..
Broadcasting is makes me wonder where all the particles go.. I guess a skimmer and filter sock would remove some but I'm more concerned about it clogging biomedia..
Any thoughts?

Hi Matt,
I cannot imagine using it as a mud bed, to me it seems with water contact, that it would break down, it is literally mud :) When I broadcast, sure it settles, but the deposit at this point is so fine, it is even hard to see it build on the sand bed. I am using about 2 tablespoon worth every couple of weeks. I ball it up, then just let the water hit it and it quickly breaks down into a soot if you will. The water becomes cloudy grey, then it returns to normal. I would not see this really clogging sand or rocks, it is too fine for that. As you said, probably 40-50% is lost into the filter socks, skimmer, and other forms of filtration. Although my tank is rather new, I am confident that the micro-biology of the tank is well balanced. I will probably have to use it a few more times to see any benefits, but so far nothing bad has occurred :)

Weeeeewwww :D Good to see you back again Perry :) I'm looking forward to seeing what you can achieve in this little tank! I like the sounds of the mud lol

Hey Dom,
Thanks my man, I appreciate all the kind words! This little tank is going to rock, new light coming soon :) Yeah, I like this mud stuff, it seems to add some feeding potential to corals and inverts. Anyway, no negative effects, so time will tell.

So happy to see the new start buddy:beer:
Everything looks nice and i'm sure as the days go by they will become even better:thumbsup:

For sure! A little tank can be just as much fun and certainly as challenging as a bigger one :) You'll have to keep us updated with everything though!

Perry nice to see the new set up. Im not around as much anymore but like to pop in on my mates journals every now and than. Cant wait to see how this one turns out.

Hey perry, it was finally good to meet you and the family. Tank looks great and can't wait till you can throw that halide on top of it.

Hey Mike, how are you my friend? I have been kind of dormant around here, I need to get back in the game, lol :)

Hi Dom, whats up mate! For a small tank, I sure am spending $$$. I do have some challenges as far as nutrients go, but starting to work down through consistent water changes. Thanks for the reply, hopefully soon I will have more to show.

Thanks Michael, I appreciate you popping in :) Yep, new journal, new tank, new set of challenges, but I am happy to have this little setup. I cannot expand too much more, I like that, so once I get the new light up, I will start to see some results, at least I hope. All in all, the tank is setup exactly how I want it.

Hey Matt,
Thanks for coming by and having a beer, hope to see the lagoon going soon! We will have to get together soon for sure. Thanks again buddy!

nice intro Perry!

can´t wait to see what you are going to do with this tank!

Cheers

Hey Flo,
Thanks for looking in on the tank and journal. Right now things are kind of ho hum, but hopefully the new light will help get things going. I have not had much success with LED, so for now, I need to work with technology that I am familiar with. Soon I will get some pics :)

Update:
Tomorrow the light comes in, took awhile, but by Tues, I will be firing that bad boy up. As a reminder, it is a Hamilton Cayman Sun pendant, with a 250 watt SE Radium bulb. Hamilton also makes the ballast. I imagine this will light the footprint very well.(24"x24"x21"tall) depth is 5" less, due to filtration compartment. I will start the pendant at 14" above the tank, and slowly lower. The plan is to start at 5 hours a day for the first 2 weeks, then go to 6 hours a day. That will be the max as there is really no need for a longer photoperiod with this lamp. I will use a kessil all blue at max 30% to ramp dawn and dusk.
Aquascape Update:
I changed the pyramid to more of a bommie, I wanted to use the top portion of the tank for ample swim space. I now have 5 fish, and plan to get maybe 3 more total. Right now I have a pair of true percs, a longnose hawk, an ora black cardinal, and a female melanarus wrasse. I also have acquired some sick mari cultures, soon I will photo :) I got a crazy pink milli, a blue with yellow hues milli, a funky tenuis, and crazy pink with blue hues humilus. These are some killer bali maris by buddy Steve at Stormborn Reef has been bringing in. When I say hot, I mean hot... Never seen a humilus like this one, I cannot wait to get a sweet photo :)

Perry, updates are good and all and I'm glad to hear the light is coming in soon but you said you re scaped....
re scaped!
Dude, we need a pic..... come on... we are blind, here. :)

now that is what i call light! :D

really looking forward to the new pictures!

Cheers

I would have pictures, but taking them under LED is impossible for me, lol... I have confirmation that the new light has arrived, so tonight I will try and install. I am confident that my camera works well under halide lighting, so this should be good.

Hey Matt,
I hear you, I cannot take pictures worth a darn under LED, I am using a prototype led, this thing only on for a week, and is blowing the Kessil lamps out of the water. If I knew this lamp would have worked so well, I may have stuck with it. However, I am really excited to re-visit halides, and Radium is the best one I have used in SE bulbs. I am partial to the Phoenix 14k in the DE bulbs. If installation is a breeze, I may have time to take pics tonight, otherwise I will have to wait until tomorrow. The new scape makes more sense, you will see when I post.
Thanks again man!
