Perry's Solana (Re-Booted)

I would like to introduce my 5 month old Solana, of course re-booted... My Simple Solana has evolved into more than I originally anticipated, while I still employ "simple" husbandry approach, I upgraded the equipment and have minimalized my aquascape. I moved out nearly 25-30 lbs of rock, leaving me a low rock scape. With a low scape, I had to upgrade the lighting, 150watt halide would not give the intensity I needed, a 250watt would, but heating would certainly become a concern...
Solution:

Innovative Skye 92 watt LED Tablet(14K)

*side note, I will be adding 4 t5's @ 24 watts a piece to the tank, the lights will extend past the 20" width, but led's alone, at least this unit, I will add actinics and 1 fiji purple. just seems to be missing something in the spectrum, some corals pop, while others look dull*

As far as filtration goes, I was using a Octopus bh100 HOB skimmer, I did not really like the way the skimmer fit on the back, and I was not thrilled with the way the water flowed through the filtration desing in the Solana, I had to nearly fill the back chambers all full, in order for the pump and skimmer to operate, result was lots of detritus build up, this was leading to other issues in the tank, HAIR ALGAE...ugh...

Solution 1:

JNS WS-1 Drop in Skimmer (Sicce Syncra 1.0 powered)

Soloution 2:

2 Little Fishies PO4 reactor, already employed, but switched media to Brightwells XPORT PO4

So far so good, I really like the fact that the media is like croutons, looks like them coated with GFO, so far the hair algae is on the retreat, I suspect leaching from my dry rock used during original setup. I also use a top off, the resevoir is 10 gallon tank, I use a simple float switch located in 3rd chamber of the filtration setup. I now have the water flowing exactly like it was designed by the Solana system, I use a passive sock of carbon located in the 3rd chamber, and that is about it for filtration. I will continue to do 5 gallon weekly water changes, using TMPR salts. I also have ordered the Brightwells XPORT NO3, which to my knowledge can be added to the same chamber of the PO4 rx. This should be about it for awhile.

Hey Kasey, What's up! Yeah, the tank looks good, but not great, I am hanging in there waiting for the corals to acclimate completely to led's, time will tell. I have added a single aquatic life 2 bulb t5 unit to the front of the tank, this really helped, I am now between 14k and 20k with the added 48 watts of actinics. This really helped, I now have moonlights 24-7, 14 watts leds from 8 AM until 8 PM, 48 watt t5's actinics from 9AM to 7 PM, and 84 watts led 14k from 12PM-6PM. This schedule seems to be working good, still getting used to nightime moonlights though, never really used, just allowed ambient light to creep in :) Are you happy with the choice to go back to halides? I am still on the fence with a purchase of an aquamedic single 250watt hqi pendant, and use the t5's to supplement. I want to try and give the leds a chance. Owell, I may get the light anyway...lol

I'm extremely happy with switch back to halides. I won't change to any other lighting for a very long time.

I'm glad you're having good results with the LEDs; I just couldn't seem to get them dialed in.

Hey Kasey,
I am much happier now that the t5's are supplementing. Both are 420nm Geismann bulbs. Without the addition, the lights were making corals drab, but now with t5, I get that shimmer and pop, so I think it will work, colors starting to come along. I almost sold the led setup, but decided to give it a fair chance, and allow the corals to get used to it. I am more happy with the water quality at this point, my skimmer is really rocking, the entire cup is bubbles, thing kicks butt... :)

Update Today!

Been having a bit of color and base up tissue necrosis issues lately, I attributed to led change, and of course, that had to be the issue right? Wrong, I noticed on blue stag some orange dots that were moving. So, I looked closer, and yes, it was, Red Bugs...ohh noo....

So, update today:
Dip, dip, dip... All sps dipped in the controversial dip method using Bayer Insect Complete, thanks to Whisperer for his personal research/experiment. So, first dip, zero red bugs, and the suspected coral showing PE within hour. I have not seen PE in weeks, thought this coral was on the way out. All others puffed up and showed tremendous PE. Plan is to continue observation and dipping, and maybe quarenteen if necessary. Since my hands were in the tank, I removed even more live rock, I am now satisfied with the layout. More pics to come:)

Sorry to hear about the red bugs, but that dip sounds like it'll knock 'em out. Looking forward to the pics!

Kasey,
Thanks for the words of encouragement, I could not get my mind around the tissue loss from the base up on a few corals, some I just pitched, as I have seen necrosis events cause collateral damage to otherwise happy corals. To be quite honest, I think the corals look better after the dip than before.
Here is the tank after pulling a few more lbs. of liverock and coral placement + some gluing...:)

Quick update:
Added BOP, GB, Purple Stylo, and Monitpora Confusa to the tank yesterday, they are all ORA pieces, really looking good, kinda designed a birdsnest area of all 4 species I carry in the tank... Anyway, a few pics snapped today, using an IPAD2, takes a nice pic, but need a SLR badly:(

What's up Rob, long time bro! I PM'd you the skimmer, there was a thread on here awhile back, it spoke of this skimmer. It is litterally 1/2 an aquamaxx hob, but based on specs, it holds the same skimming capacity, rated for tanks up to 90gallons. I can tell you that it skimms like a beast, is well crafted, super silent(mp10 much louder), and produces a very fine bubble. I had to mod the Solana 1st chamber a bit, but is securely in place and I could not be happier... How are things in Tampa?
:)

Thanks for the PM Perry! That skimmer is next on the list to pick up. I actually hit up all the stores in the area yesterday and there are def a lot of good buys and frags to be scooped up. Took home a couple gems myself. Will have to take a picture of the tank when I can get my camera to cooperate.

Cool,
Look forward to seeing your tank!
As you can see, I still have a fancy for sps corals :) I miss Tampa, so many nice stores with killer deals, and some variety, seems I can only find occasional gems, nothing like Tampa :)

So you thinking about that skimmer, as a drop in skimmer, I cannot believe how powerful such a small skimmer could be, you will not be dissapointed.
