Pest Anemone

So in the three years I previously ran a reef tank I never had problems with pest anemones. I bought 3 "premium" live rocks from a LFS, and I have found 2 Aiptasia on 1 rock. (Nuked them with boiling water and haven't seen them in 3 days) Then I see some feathery translucent critters on same rock, look it up and its another pest (Couldn't find a name for them) Now my wife points out a green thing on a different rock. Cool I think, looks like a baby GBTA. Then I think to myself, better look that up on RC. Yeppers you guessed it, Majano Anemone. I don't know whether to nuke these and hope that's it, or just take the rock back and demand my money back. What do you guys think?

haha well this is hard to get around, many people have different opinions on what "premium rock" is..Buying rock that someone just yanked up from the sea will always have critters,no matter what the retailers say..There is just not enough of live rock around that people have used in their systems that are "pretty much" pest free to go around..

my advice, make a kalk slurry and nuke them one at a time..Or get a few shrimp..

Already picked up 2 peppermint to have in the tank. I always kept a couple for this reason (Maybe why I have never seen them before) I didn't get more since I have just restarted and didn't want to overload. I have 3 chromis, 2 baby Ocellaris, 10 blue legs, and 2 peppers. Not getting much for readings yet. With the sump system, "live sand", and rock I may not get much cycling/spike, but I'd rather go slow. I never started from scratch with the 120 before since I moved my 75 over to it intact and went from there. Am I being too conservative, or does this sound like an ok pace and add a few more things in a couple of weeks?

Get some aptasia x joes juice or kalk mix and squirt into the mouths on the small ones with a plastic syringe. Jusy dont do all at one time not good for the tank do one one day wait a few days amd move on to the next one. Also IMO i have never seen a shrimp eat pest nems ever. So dont buy shrimp JUST fo pest nems cause i almost gurantee u they will ignore the pest nems

Oh I would have bought them anyway. I like as many diverse things as possible and the inverts are cheap ways to get that. I like different crabs and snails as well. Plus my son loves to look for the different "Mr. Crabs" Gotta love Spongebob.

I will vouch for Joes Juice working on aiptasia and majano, Aiptasia X on the other had was an utter waste of my money . In all probability I was using it in the wrong fashion? That being said it has worked for a lot of other people.

hehe that sure is a bunch of crabs..sounds like a good pace, you will still get a bit of a cycle though..If not just the pesky algae bloom cycle that happens with most new set ups..If the rocks are not set in a large stack yet..pull them out and paste over the aptasia with kalk paste..That kills them quite dead..

Being that the tank is new and you are just getting started I would consider replacing the rocks for the mojavos- those are nasty suckers.

Aptasia you can get a CBB- not sure if they will go after mojavos.

Peppermint shrimp is hit or miss, I had 3, one sliced and diced my rbta 30 minutes after it went into the tank, he is serving a life sentence in the sump.

If you want to keep the rock, take it out and torch the mojavos. I did that with some rocks that had Xenia growing on them and 3 months later, no sign of them!

I spotted one majano in our 37g a few months ago and luckily it has NOT multiplied, (that I can see). Last week I noticed that I went from one aiptasia to like 3-5. I was able to take 2 of the rocks out that they were on and they met their firey demise by way of MAPP Gas Torch...haven't seen anymore since.

i'll tell you that i once bought a rock from an LFS that was "premium" because, and I quote, "it has free anenomes". or "lots of critters"...or...or....basically, if you got Majanos...get rid of them FAST. They took out a 400 gal over a year ago. Quickly.

I totally have majanos in my tank. I never knew what they were. They're actually very pretty- electric green with bright pink tips. They do multiply, but not so quickly that I couldn't eliminate them entirely from sight if I chose to. My friend had a nano with a clown fish hosting them and the clown would feed them so that now they cover the entire surface of everything in the tank, including the background.
