Some of this is pretty picayune. If someone can pay 25K for a car, they can certainly have 14K lamps over an aquarium. Context rules. And cubes... I'm oddly uncomfortable with it but then I realize that calling ANY tank, any man-made thing, a cube is just an approximation and I calm down. I once built a tank that I never thought of as a cube... it was all rectangles... but it was more cube than a lot of what people call "cube" tanks today and I just roll with it.
My #1 peeve is going into a LFS and seeing tanks full of dying coral (goes for fish too but coral is more common). Or maybe it's going a week later and seeing tanks full of healthy new coral and knowing that in a month or two they will be doing the same dance all over again. I don't know why it bugs me with coral when every grocery store does the same thing with bananas but it does. It would be like going behind a pet store and finding piles of dead cats and dogs. If you can't keep the live animals you are selling alive, you shouldn't be trying to sell them!
The rest are kinda insignificant or derivative.

...that was a pretty "holier than thou" attitude..

My pet peeve as well. Every seller who rockets to 50 posts, and at day 91 makes a camp in the selling forums, even after months of selling several times a week and rarely (if ever) posting in any of the site's "content" areas, angrily tells us that we:
A) are picking on them,
B) by enforcing our pretty straightforward and generally well-known commercial rules we have gotten so big that we have forgotten about the little guys (our no-nonsense rules are one of the main reasons our site has gotten where it is today), and finally
C) the people whose selling privileges have been rescinded are all true altruists, just trying to offer fellow reefers a good deal (even if they are buying corals and chopping them into tiny pieces as soon as they can, or routinely cruising garage sales and Craigslist looking specifically for things to sell here).
But I'm not commercial! I haven't made any profit (once you factor in all the costs)!
Yeah, but you are EXACTLY the reason we have the rules we have. Once you start looking at corals and equipment for their resale value on RC, you're not here for the right reason anymore. You're using RC's resources to reach customers, and not supporting RC's actual mission (the exchange of reef-related information). Sell your goods on Craigslist - it's what they're designed for.
So yeah, I have a pet peeve!

Threads about Pet Peeves
peeves make terrible pets, i hade one once and it persisted to annoy me on every chance it could. why are there dishes in the sink even though i just did the dishes? the peeve did it. why is the TV turned at a slight angle just enough to cause insane glare on the tv? the peeve did it. why is that algae back even though i cleaned it last night? the peeve did it. in all honesty peeves as pets was a stupid idea.
Remember always have your Peeves spayed or neutered so they dont overpopulate and annoy us all.
I'm curious, do the mods have a general unspoken rule on selling? I've read the rules but it doesn't seem to be very clear. The general consensus from people I've talked to is this, "don't let them see you selling too much". I haven't tried to make any money selling anything on here. Just a few used items I didn't need anymore. I'm sure in a couple years when my corals grow out I'll want to offer some frags for sale. When that time comes, should I be aware of a "sweet spot" that I need to stay in to keep from getting banned? How are we to know how much is too much? Is it simply a matter of the Mod's opinion? If we're supposed to use craigslist to sell stuff then why have a selling forum at all? And lets be honest, your no nonsense rules on selling are not what got reef central where it is today. They've helped protect profits. What got reef central where it is today are the massive amounts of people that frequent the site. I guess that's a pet peeve of mine. I wish the reef central mods were a little more respectful sometimes of it's members. I know there are some bad apples out there but not all of us are out to make a profit. A little respect and dignity goes a long way. P.S. if this post violates the rules please feel free to delete it.
My wife usually wants to talk to me when I am doing #2
Well most people think we are picking on them alone and no one else, because someone else is doing it. Honestly once you start frag tanks you are setting up shop as far as corals go. It's amazing how many tell us they are just hobbyiests, only for us to find out they are very commercial and actually businesses. It's just real hard to be tactful as people think we should be, no matter what we say we get accused of many things. Then we get told why we are wrong.
We try to discuss before we take any action unless it's so obvious a blind man could see.
I think our strict rules is exactly how we got where we are truthfully. Look at all the boards started to get away from the hardnose rules. The successful ones eventually have the very same rules they left. You have to it's simple.
If you haven't left the selling forums for 3 months, it's pretty obvious you're not here to contribute, we take in account people that are getting out of the hobby. There are just so many factors in it.
