Pets of the URS

OK, it's probably about time that I posted mine:

Here's Smokey - 9 year old Border Collie / Springer Spaniel mix (or so Lollipop told me), and a real sweetie:

And here's Timber - a 1 1/2 year old pure bred Beagle (he was a rescue too, but from my in-laws) taking a nap in one of his favorite spots (I probably should post this picture in the "Help - My Dog Needs a Job" thread. Anyway, he's terrible. Friendly, but bad, especially around food. One of these days he's going to Doggie Boot Camp:

Hmm.... seeing a possible reefing beagle meet-up in the future :)

Jason - my beagle is also Extremely food motivated. She's an absolute joy if we're Very strict with her, but if strictness lessens, she becomes a serious PITA. I could tell you some of the disciplinary things that help if you like..... he's a pretty little guy :)

Check out the pic on page one of Eppie waiting for permission to eat - that's a big step.

Lizz,

Oh, he'll do that. If you tell him and Smokey sternly "Off" and put food in their bowl, they won't take it. They'll sit there and shake and drool but won't take the food until you tell them to take it.

Now, if you take the food out of his bowl?!?! That's a totally different story, particularly if the kids are eating something. He thinks nothing of jumping up and taking it right off of their plate, or right out of their hands. And unattended food?!?! Pfft! Fuhgeddaboudit!

He definitely needs obedience training. Both of my prior dogs had it, we've just been lazy with Timber. We were THINKING about maybe getting another dog, but we literally attained him through the following phone negotiation:

Sister-in-Law to my Wife: "Do you want Timber, because if you don't, we're taking him to Lollipop tomorrow."
Wife to Me: "What do you think, do you want to take him?"
Me to Wife (rolling-eyes): "Sigh....Fine....bring him over."

2 hours later Timber showed up at our house with all his stuff. He's better than he was - he wasn't even house trained when we got him, so that was a good start. Plus, we did train him on the electric fence. But, we really need to make time for obedience training...and make it a priority to get him a little snippity-snip-snip (even though my brother-in-law that wouldn't keep him thinks I'm crazy for wanting to neuter a pure-bred Beagle - like I'm going to breed him or show him!)

Anyway, feel free to share any tips, or recommend any good obedience classes out here on the West Side of Rochester...

Oh, and yes, there does seem to be some type of connection between reef keeping and Beagle owning!

And Justin - thanks for the compliment, though I had nothing to do with his looks or in choosing him!

Ooo - kids make the whole equation much more difficult! When I visit my parents and there are tons of grandkids around (my nephews and nieces) we use the "go out" command during meals and she leaves the room - but kids carrying around snack foods are easy targets because the beagle sees itself as higher up in the pack than small children.
It sounds like you're on a good track though - especially as I see that he isn't obese yet. :)

PS Eppie eats any food left out when we're not home - some items have been: half a pound of butter, a whole uncooked sweet potato, a bag of tortillas (carefully removed while leaving the packaging intact), and 6 carrots (before I noticed - now she gets carrots for treats sometimes instead of a chewy).
5 mini snickers bars - when I calculate that she's one quarter my size..... 20 mini snickers - barf.

We Almost always remember to put everything away.....

Cesar Millan / Dog Whisperer on Nat Geo is a favorite of mine. My male akita went through puppy and obedience classes and then I just used the same techniques with my younger female. They still have a few quirks but food aggression was nipped right in the bud with a few of Cesar's techniques. Female used to lunge at the male. She learned to stop doing that after having to lay there and watch him eat a few times. They share dishes now and constantly have access to food. ;)

Time to meet Tess the Wonder Dog, because we wonder what we were thinking about when we got her. She's half poodle and half Westie so she's a Pestie. She's a great make-up remover, gals, so come on over if you need a face wash.

Dreaminmel I love your akita pics! I almost went with an Akita but found the blue APBT and have always loved the color so I went with that but Akitas are definetaly a fantastic breed.
